What's involved? I mean, how many players (bandwidth considerations), does anyone need server-level access?

I've never tried playing GU ... always had too much lag. A local server ... hmmm ... I might stand a chance ... :-)

End of the experiment ...

The players have voted with their feet ... seems like no-one can get to the server without suffering lag, so I suspect that my upstream ISP isn't quite up to the job. I'll try to get another server lined up one day, either directly connected to a peering exchange or on one of the "major" (...

Try using your IP before you go through the hassle of using no-ip. If that works, than try to set up a no-ip account. And yes, it should be DNS Host (A). I will try my IP again but i was wondering did i port ford correctly From inside your own network you won't be able to connect to the public IP ....

Your server seems to have unstable lag. Sometimes I am even worse off there than at a US server. I've seen a couple of /reports about that. My link into FXnet seems to be pretty stable, so the problems are either related to server performance itself, or perhaps to the lack of decent peering between...

Driving up obstacles ...

What are the 'rules' for a tank driving up onto a surface? In testing, I can get a tank to drive almost automatically onto a surface about 0.2 units higher than the current surface ... but it still impedes movement a little. I've tested down as far as a height of 0.01, and this will still occasional...

Ah, the correct answer ..

Thanks for the hint about the scripts in /misc of the source. In there I can see bzfquery.pl, by our maintainer Mr Riker, showing how to connect directly to the server port and get stats out. This script can be happily run on a scheduled basis and output into anything. Just what I needed :-) Also mr...

Its up at ahs3.no-ip.biz:7425 Very useful, thanks ahs3. The map looked very nice; I liked the gravity/jump height, it makes it easy enough to jump squares ... but not too easy! Perhaps some different textures and square colours would help to jazz it up ... it might not need this however. Great stuff!

How can I collect data from the server ... ?

How do I report on the status of my server, while it is running? I'd like to collect simple things, like the number of players ... At the moment I have an admin observer permanently logged in, running under screen ... and a decent logfile from the -d option. But I don't have an automated way to coll...

BZ server in New Zealand

Players from NZ and Australia are used to being very laggy on most servers ... Well, no more! bz.gonzul.net is located in Dunedin, NZ on a 1MB (burst to 2MB) connection, running on a low-spec desktop. Currently it hosts my new map, Yojimbo's Barrier, and a copy of ahs3's Dodge Trainer 2v2. /report a...

Initial feedback seems OK ...

Had a good afternoon with this map, around a dozen players at the peak (of course, it wasn't afternoon for them!). Shame about the lag getting to the server, I was the only player <200ms. The centre section holds up well under fire, and the end passes are dangerous to both defenders and attackers. S...

Yojimbo's Barrier -- my first map :-) 4 team CTF

I have decided to turn my hand to mapmaking at last, and here is my first effort ... Yojimbo's Barrier v0.2, currently running at bz.gonzul.net:5154 (hosted in New Zealand, everyone else will lag a lot ...) This is a simple 4 team CTF map, influenced by Pillbox. Each team has their own zone of the m...

The Geno question

Hunted down and spawn-killed simply because you're an easy target and someone wants their scores to go up, no skill is involved, no sportsmanship exists... Ah, and that's what the Geno flag is for ... get the flag, identify the weakest member of the opposing team, and hunt them for as long as possi...

1. Map feature 2. Long range spawn-killing 3. Short range spawn-killing To that'd I'd add "admin policy" for well-policed games. If the game messages say "no base camping" that makes the policy obvious, and will be referred to by admins/cops and registered players willing to sta...

Re: Server warning!!!!!

Server warning - your lag is too high Lots of different reasons ... Your network connection is too slow. Your computer is too busy -- stop downloading, stop music The game server is too far away -- choose a server that is faster or closer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lag ---- Trying Babelfish ... ...

Re: How much bz admin time is needed?

A hint, maybe you already know about it: I suggest to activate "poll kick" and "poll ban" for registered players in your server config. So in the case noone is administering and enough registered players are available, then they have a chance to get rid of rule-breakers/cheaters...

How much bz admin time is needed?

I'm thinking of running a new BZ server; I have the servers, the admin resources, and a reason for players to come ... But how much time will I have to spend administering my bz server; detecting and banning cheats, that sort of thing... ? I'm happy importing other sets of admins from other places t...

Well there's a thing :-) I just started another test run, connected, spawned, fired three unlocked GMs out of 5, saw then run for less than maximum distance, and got kicked for wrong end shot detection. So I don't see the kick being rdirectly elated to the number of shots in flight ... and in my cas...

kicked for endShotDetection when shooting ...

I've noticed this kick a few times recently, and I guess it's only since being on wireless LAN as well (WRT54G v5, with Dell Broadcom under WinXP). I've just run up a local server for some other testing, and I've noticed pretty consistently that I've been kicked for this reason when firing GM - shot...
