ALso, the Riva TNT2 hardware engine is terrible with doing manipulations on 24/32-bit color depth. Try changing to 16-bit (High Color) and you should see a good performance boost (I got about a 35% or so boost when I was using nVidia's drivers on my old Riva TNT2, running on GNU/Linux).
