How come that when have the #1 score in a bzflag, people will find *any* excuse to ban you? Why are these people chosen to be server admins in the first place? Are the server owners that complacent? then use a mixer to actually turn your volume up, it's set to zero by default with ALSA.

Can you add -fb to the server parameters so there will be flags on buildings again?

A more recent server version would be nice too, this one doesn't provide the means to cache the server map (client side).
