I'd like to say that my company did acquire a new internet line, and pieinthesky is back up, after a few hours being down, with the new ip. Have fun!

server outage

I have final information that the current connection for pieinthesky and the other maps I hosted (who used them anyway?) _will_ be offline tomorrow. There is no definite timeline when services will be restored, but I'm working as hard as I can on it! Just a notice so people have a place to see what ...

I know. You are correct -- running a bzflag server doesnt require massive bandwidth, but it requires a very low latency connection with an amount of bandwidth not normally available from cable or DSL providers. Even 7mbit SDSL couldn't compare to an ethernet line dropped from an ISP. The costs inclu...

It's a 6mbit line from Intellispace to a location in Manhattan. It's been tweaked to allow 45mbps though. So a T3 for $2,250(US)/mo.

pieinthesky

I have some inside news and I fear that I may no longer be able to host pieinthesky after 2 weeks or so. (More inside news reveals that 2 weeks seems like the max time left, instead of the minimum, 3-5 days being more likely) The person who currently owns the connection wants to drop it and I cannot...

I'd be glad to host this map.
We should discuss all the details privately.

Pimping my rig!

I just wanna pimp my rig for one of my fun servers that I have running. I've seen more and more people play on it so I decided to give some details on the wonderful machine this server runs on, with a brief introduction on the bzflag server settings first. (This is regarding bzflag.jmsent.com) This ...

machine gun

On my server (10shot.pieinthesky.kicks-ass.org) has machine gun adjusted so its rate of fire is extremely fast, and the range is considerably longer than a normal machine gun... Machine gun is quite usable and can be quite a lifesaver at times, especially when there are 20 or more people on.

This functionality is already in 1.10.6 servers.
You should read the manual yourself, but here is an excerpt anyway, free of charge:

-prohibitBots Disallow clients from using the ROGER autopilot or from using robots.

That goes on the server command line, or the -conf equiv.

banning

I recently accidentally banned one of my server admins. There was a cheater on his subnet and he wasnt present when I put the ban on, so I had no idea it was him.

Has anybody else ever encountered this type of thing happening before? I guess it's so rare that it probably wont ever happen again.

Toaster...

The server can already detect when there is a roger or bot, and disallow such use.
Unfortunately, it relies on the [ROGER] ... is taking controls of ... messages to detect the use of Roger.

The source told me so.

so, toaster... fix that one :P

A general tip is that 128kbps is NOT going to cut it. That is 16KBps (minus tcp/udp/pppoe overhead) throughput... which is sufficient for about 2-3 people. I've seen on my 10shot server when carrying 25 people average about 450KBps output... that's about 4000kbps or 4mbit. Your 128kbps wont cut it f...

To actually answer the question, rm -rf ~/bzf erased all the files in /usr/home/<user>/.bzf . Of course, for linux that would be most commonly known as /home/<user>/.bzf ... try "man rm" to find out what rm does. Then "man man".

.bzf is a "hidden" (a 'dotfile') directory in your home directory. it contains settings about your bzflag setup. Cached things may have gotten corrupted, or a version upgrade caused an incompatability with the old version of the files. When you started it as root, it created a NEW /root/.b...

I moved the server from its original location to a new location. There were some occasional playability problems which caused me to move the server. The server now runs on a dedicated Dual UltraSparcII 450 with 2GB ram. Enough power and bandwidth to host 20 servers with 25 players each! I added mult...
