Ok, turning off compositing does indeed fix this problem, and I have discovered a hotkey salute that toggles it on and off, so this isn't the big pain I thought it was going to be.

Thanks for the tip. After a four year hiatus, I am back playing bzflag again, it looks very nice :)

Isn't that a bit of a pain, having to turn off desktop effects every time you run bzflag?

I also built it with SDL support, thinking that would be better -- was that a mistake, or does that not make any difference here?

I'm running KDE 4.9.3 with desktop compositing, yes.

I am running bzflag 2.4.2 on Gentoo with kernel 3.4.9: Linux thinkpad_T500 3.4.9-gentoo #12 SMP Sun Nov 18 10:10:03 CET 2012 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9400 @ 2.53GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux bzflag runs just fine, but there is constant flickering that is very distracting, and this turns me in...
