I think the "ganging up" thing is partly because people are in general more obsessed with winning, than not losing, if you see what I mean. They feel more successful beating a weaker team, than defending against a stronger team. I see it in <M>issile war a lot. With Missilewar, personally ...

Mine's pretty straightforward. The history was that I had been using "the enemy" on a different online multi-player game, but it worked even better with bzflag. "You were killed by the enemy" is just so appropriate. I set the email addr to "within" because I liked the r...

I sometimes want to set up alliances, but it can be difficult with newbies around who've only just managed to learn not to teamkill. I sometimes set up alliances with individuals. But for team alliances it would be a lot nicer if there was a key mapping to send messages to whole teams. Although I ca...

I really love Rabbit Hunt and will frequently choose that if I see one being played.

One map that worked really well was Basement by Corndawg. I haven't seen that in a long time, but it was good fun. Anyone have a copy of the world file? I can't find it in the map-making forums.

Mousewheel for radar sounds a great idea. I'm always fiddling my radar with 1,2,3. And I can see the config file runes for how do to it - the default config does it already if you hold down shift.

Ta for that.

You can strafe in bzflag now? Wow, didn't know that. You know what I mean :-). Turning while jumping so you can shoot someone perched on top of a block. I've occasionally had to play bzflag with a keyboard. Maybe it was just that I would need more practice, but getting the angvel of the turn right ...

I wish '7' was in the help keys page in the client. I keep forgetting it. There are a few other keys in that help page that are missing too, which is a shame. As for hunt, don't forget that hunt is automatic (and useful) for rabbit hunt. On other maps, I tend to hunt the player with the highest scor...

I've certainly used thief on mofo for killing BUs. Sometimes thief is useful as a variant and harder-to-kill version of high speed, if you need to get from one end of the map to the other. Sometimes people will go to all sorts of lengths to keep their flag from being stolen. Get them out of position...

Practice on servers with only one or two other players, and then tell them you're a newbie and be gentle :). Bots are even better for practicing. Sometimes it does help if you ask people not to kill you as you want to explore or practice the controls or whatever. Myself, I try and respect that, alth...

Definitely mouse for me. Trying to do a strafe and jump is hard enough even with the fine control available to a mouse - it's going to be much harder with a keyboard. That said, there are some maps where the keyboard can do well, such as pillbox, where changing direction instantly can help you dodge...

Super bullets may be good depending on the map and a suitable place to shoot from. Ditto the other flags - sometimes they're good on a map and sometimes no use. Or it depends on other things, for example, on narrow versus tiny, narrow is better if there are fewer players so you can't be blindsided; ...

It could be a server or world option of course.

But I think there are probably too many difficulties when a team spawns at base after a capture for it to work. That and playing against jerky laggy players.

And as in the other thread, multiple wing jumps must have been a conscious decision of the map maker or server owner - it isn't the default. Further up someone said that GM is a way to get someone witih Wings. It sort of is. But the problem with it is at the same time Wings were introduced in 2.0, G...

Well said Jeff. Some maps are better with a high wingsjumpcount, and for some reason many maps/servers seem to use it; but there's definitely too many that shouldn't because it makes wings too powerful. The default settings make WG quite tame.

You're right that it's new, although it's a server specific setting that IIRC defaults to off.

narrow- is probably a good way sept if they just get you lined up your toast so its best to try and strafe jump so you're always facing them so they only have this thin line to shoot at Personally I think if you use narrow it's better to stand a little further off and just jump up. It's easier to h...

Radar flags and radar shot issues with 2.0 on linux

I've normally been playing on a Win XP box. All works fine. Now I've gotten around to putting Fedora Core 3 on the same box as a dual boot. I got a bzflag 2.0 RPM specifically built for FC3 so I don't believe there's any issue there. But there's some graphics oddities, if you look at the attached sc...

I haven't seen this personally even in the situation you describe, but it may be worth checking immediately after it happens with /lagstats whether you had any packet loss.

So to rephrase it, should bzflag be more realistic or is the gameplay more important?

Personally I think the gameplay is more important provided it doesn't mean it's so unrealistic as to confuse newbies.

If you want to share with files with NT/XP, the best idea is to have a small extra partition in FAT32 mode. Failing that if you look at http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/rpm/rel26.html you'll see the latest ntfs drivers have safe but very very limited write support. You could probably pre-create a l...
