Re: BZ-Next: A modern OpenGL BZFlag client

One thing that is generally bothering me is the idea of copyright assignment. This has bothered me as well, at times. Specifically, when I was porting the game to OpenGL ES, I re-used some code from another one of my projects, and there was a question of “exclusive” versus “non-exclusive” copyright...

Re: BZ-Next: A modern OpenGL BZFlag client

The shadows implementation at first looks like a subtle change, and then on closer inspection you can see what a huge improvement that is. The gamma adjustment was another big improvement over the initial screenshots. Very nice work indeed.

Re: BZ-Next: A modern OpenGL BZFlag client

Even basic shadow mapping (beyond just drawing them on the ground like we do now) would be a huge visual improvement, I imagine… can’t wait to see it.

It's actually not so bad.
Interesting… I bet it’s mostly pulling examples from our wiki pages for the different map elements. But agreed, not awful.

Re: Modern OpenGL client of some sort

I am intrigued by this project. I have also created various basic rendering prototypes over the years (which you may see on the forums), but this seems to be more ambitious and to have a more clear direction. I plan to follow your progress. One question I have (which is something I've pondered in ca...

Never once have I written a plug in because of some kind of production quota. My plug ins were written when I was inspired by an idea, or when a specific need arose.

Re: Horrible scoring - Why custom game modes aren't popular and suck

Nice intro, argument, and conclusion, although I didn't mean to infer that it needs to be a rigid structure with labels. :P I suggest reading up on argumentative essays (the same can apply to forum topics, albeit with less formality) for a general understanding of how to present an idea with meaning...

Re: Warnock's dilemma - Regarding it and potential issues and solutions

I think reactions would be great. There have been many times when I wished to agree/concur with a post or show appreciation for it, but had no other commentary to add. As others have stated/inferred, much of the non-engagement lately relates to forum topics that failed to communicate ideas clearly a...

Re: BZFlag freezes

It looks like a driver issue to me. Apple is known to have poor support for old APIs like OpenGL with their drivers. The hackintosh factor adds many unknowns. You could try playing with various graphics options in the game to see if anything makes a difference.

Re: FFA league - concept and discussion

Individual competitive/ranked/ladder play is a viable concept in most games, in tandem with the more formal league play with organized teams. I imagine it would work just as well in BZFlag. However, I do not believe that BZFlag's current ailments would be solved by the addition of such an option at ...

Re: suddenDeathCTF - Timed games with the first team to cap winning the game

Probably leave it as a draw. In a tournament setting, the organizers could determine a method for establishing priority in case overtime ends without a winner (e.g., higher- or lower-seeded team, factor in personal K/D, first- or last-to-capture, random prioritization at start of overtime, etc.). Co...

Re: suddenDeathCTF - Timed games with the first team to cap winning the game

I'd like to see a sudden death overtime option for timed games that end in a draw. The overtime period should probably (optionally) have a firm time limit as well. This could be useful for tournaments which have an elimination format where draws are unideal.

Re: BZ 2.4.24 & .26, Mac M1 and video

Does it truly occur on every map, including 1.x maps? We are aware of reports of this issue, but I thought it was limited to only certain maps (especially those that use meshes). So far it appears to be a driver bug, and we have not determined a solution or workaround yet.

The macOS builds are posted. As usual, we are not yet signing and notarizing the builds, so you will need to right-click (or ctrl-click) on the application and select "Open" from the contextual menu in order to bypass Gatekeeper for the first launch. For the nerds among us, both builds sti...

I got banned for cheating once. The admin in this case was relying a little too much on her extended observer info, and saw a yellow tank speed indicator next to my name. Re: Bizarre ApiString comparison error

I’m a little rusty on my C++, but as you mentioned it does return a const bz_ApiString (notice the constant declaration), and the == operator overload in bz_ApiString is not declared constant (not sure if that matters or whether it affects visibility). Try assigning the return value to a variable fi...

BZFlag 2.0.x macOS Build

If anyone other than me happened to notice, the last BZFlag 2.0.x official build we made for macOS has not worked on several of the more recent macOS versions. If anyone (again, other than me) wishes to run a BZFlag 2.0.x client on macOS for any reason (such as if you have a collection of BZFlag 2.0...

Here's another mockup with an idea I've been thinking about for a little while.
