Regarding starting servers, read everything you can at: http://bzflag.org/wiki I've almost always started servers from the command prompt. The wiki will have a bunch of information on how to do that. When you try to join the server, what address and port are you specifying. You'll need to have 5154 ...

because his kids wouldn't know would they? Don't EVER assume that your kids are stupid, ok? I don't know how old these kids are, but counting on them not figuring something out is, at it's very best, a temporary solution. educate them on the dangers of giving away information Exactly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think transistor is looking for a way to disable chat altogether without the kids having any option. I don't think that it exists, but I've never had a reason to go looking for it either.... BZland is pretty safe compared to a lot of online games.

Basically, I view match rating points as the most accurate evaluator of strength we have. Granted, it's not perfect but until we get someting better... I have to agree with Quantum Dot's positions. Here's a thought: make a web page that compiles information from all the leagues, and gives an overall view of how things are going. I'd really like to see information about each individual player's affiliation, and their won/lost matches. This would obv...

Xell: exactly While yes, a league lives and dies on activity, you can't FORCE people to play. Sure, you can set all the inactivity penalties you want, but if I get another chance to go to Pakistan, or some family crisis happens, guess what? I won't be here. end of discussion. If the league can't be...

A Cap Limit should not be needed, teams should use common sense and be KIND to new teams... I have agreed in the past with this, and usually practice it myself w/ newer teams, but it is a lousy feeling when you know that a team is just being nice and not capping. I'd personally rather know the full...

Penalizing for inactivity

I think I'd like to weigh in on penalizing teams for inactivity. DO IT IF YOU WANT TO KILL THE LEAGUE Seriously, don't change my team's score based on whether or not we're absent for a month or not. Hey, I have a life. My wife/family/job trumps any video game that I will ever play. If life dictates ...

A-delusion's advice here is good. Start with getting 1 thing to work, and add one more thing at a time.

If I recall, libcurl6 errors are due to something in the network not hooking up.

One thing to keep in mind about comparing bzflag to chess is that in chess, when you play a rated game, you're matched up with players of similar ratings. In other words, there's no way that a 1300 rated player is matched up against a 2200 rated player unless it's a really small tournament. Usually,...

I'd follow CBG's suggestion to NOT try and guess at the path to your file. That's what drag and drop is for, unless you have a better autocompletion setup on the command line. One other thing that may make it easier: Try moving or saving the file to the same directory as bzfs.exe then all you need i...

I guess it all depends on how you asked. If you simply asked and he was rude, that's his problem. If you were a pain in the rear and wouldn't take no for answer, you were the problem. Sounds like your friend nano was being too insistent.

Definitely good to ask if you weren't specifically invited.

What they mean by "path" is this: you have a starting point on each volume in Windows (volume = hard drive letter such as C:\) that \ is the starting point often called root (I think they use that terminology in windoze). Under \ you will have a bunch of directories (directory = what you would call ...

Oh, one more thing that is indispensable: The man pages: http://my.bzflag.org/bzfman.cgi?bzfs.6s Any *nix user will be intimately familiar with these, but windoze users will most likely be unaware of them.
