Re: Plug-in List

Alphabetical sorting and links to the release page (or github repo) for each one would be helpful.

Re: Tank intermitently stops moving

I can also confirm this issue exists on Ubuntu 19.04 with the BZFlag version from the apt repository. I was able to get a working BZFlag by building from source and configuring it with SDL 2. This might be an issue with the older version of SDL 1.2 used by our version in the apt repository. We are l...

Re: XCode build fail

Can you build from the Xcode GUI? I’m not sure that command-line builds trigger the target that generates that buildinfo file. You might only need to do it once.

Re: Mockup of new menu

Can we work a bit with the images provided and try different things? I'm asking because I like the direction, but I don't like the current result. How about the same mock-up without the huge icons on the side, just text? Also since there was no reply, I hope legacy will be an option. Sorry, I overl...

Re: Mockup of new menu

Nicely done. Of the three color selections provided (assuming there won't be an option to configure this), I'd go with the green as a tribute to the roots of the whole thing. Any thoughts as to layer/level 2 of the menu system? e.g. will it be straight click through to a second full screen for each...

Re: Mockup of new menu

I like how that looks, will it be "clicky" ? As in navigating by clicking with a mouse because the current menu with arrow keys sucks for me, as my keyboard doesn't have arrow keys. Yes, ideally the new menu system should be navigable using keyboard, mouse, gamepad/joystick, and touch inp...

Re: Thoughts on competitive/league play

alfa1, please explain: how you would teach everyone the format for their mottos how you would get people to follow the format correctly and consistently how you expect people to sort through a list of mottos and cross-reference the information to figure out who is willing to play what, with reasonab...

Re: Thoughts on competitive/league play

It seems to me that these responses reflect that BZFlag has a small, tightly-knit community, where there is a high degree of cooperation and accommodation for players’ preferences and needs. This is in contrast to large game communities, where individual voices are not as impactful and decisions are...

Thoughts on competitive/league play

After playing in BZFlag leagues for several years and more recently playing other games that have a ranked/competitive ladder experience, I have a few ideas for the future of BZFlag league/competitive play that I wanted to jot down here. Basically, there seems to be two distinct competitive experien...

Re: Mockup of new menu

Here is an updated version with several of the suggestions taken into account, and with the menu items more closely matching what we have now. I also rendered it in a few different hues. I'm not sure what the different colors would represent, but possibilities include matching the player's current (...

Also, the word "BZFlag" is written with scaled small caps , which is a typographical pet peeve of mine (see https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5a/True_vs_Scaled_Small_Caps.svg for an example, the top is what it should look like, not the bottom). You, sir, have sent me on a g...

Found a few 20-0 screenshots, so here's one of them. I also found a 29-1 and a 31-1, but I can't establish whether those were taken right after my first death or not, so they don't count. :P

Mockup of new menu

We would like to improve the visual appeal of the game. Toward that end, here is a mockup of one idea for how a new menu system could look. 4:3 ratio (how it might look on an iPad or similar device): new menu.png 16:9 ratio (a widescreen computer monitor or a smartphone): new menu (wide).png A few p...

Spring 2019 Babel Triples Challenge

The BZFlag FunMatch Challenge returns on March 30th, 2019 for a triples event on Babel. Registration is now open at http://challenge.leaguesunited.org As a reminder, the rating method has changed from what it was several years ago. Rather than using 1vs1 League ratings, the site now pulls in your pe...

Re: bzflag graphics improvements?

We have a general idea for how we would like to improve the graphics of the game. However, there are many challenges; namely: 1) the existing graphics code is based on old methodologies and is difficult to work with; 2) there are very few developers still around who are familiar with OpenGL; and 3) ...

Re: Eighth dimension cleanup/removal

Zehra, did you forget to tell us what new effect you are going to create to replace this one you want to remove? The OO effect is not the same as a drivethrough object, so it’s important to have an effect to distinguish one from the other. Improvements (the actual work, not just ideas) are always we...

Re: A way to download within bzflag the map?

The client receives what it needs in order to let you play the game on that map. There is no avoiding this much. That doesn’t mean you have the right to take the map and use it for other things. Not all maps are released for arbitrary public use. To use the map, get permission from the map author an...

Re: Sniping League

Superflags (random superflags, anyway) introduce an element of chance that gives an advantage to the team that happens to find stronger flags than the other. There is a reason that league maps are typically symmetrical and have no superflags, which is to give the teams equal footing. Imagine introdu...

Bumping an old thread to release an updated version of a map or plugin is fine.

Re: two hour limit on posting work around - file hosting

Just make a new post in the thread for that map release. As others stated, this creates a notification of an unread post, which should draw the viewers to the updated info. The ability to edit original posts to remove outdated versions of maps is a valid use case, but unfortunately is has been lost ...

Re: Public Team Score Contribution Value

It seems reasonable to allow an “objective score” to go negative for gameplay abuse/sabotage, if it otherwise serves as a positive reinforcement even for new players who only contributed a little. Currently, having a negative score all the time can be discouraging to new players, in my view. It soun...

Re: Public Team Score Contribution Value

Before anyone jumps into implementing this, it may help to decide how far you should take this concept. You are talking about showing an additional player statistic on the scoreboard (although a simple score bonus was also mentioned, though this has already been seen in the past), so you are talking...
