A question about sound formats

I'm playing around in the data dir, trying to slip in my own sound effect. Unfortunately, BZFlag (2.1.1, btw) doesn't seem to like the encoding. According to file, my sound effect is RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, mono 22050 Hz. One of the sounds that comes with bzflag...

It's good to see a big publication pick up BZFlag.

More popularity is definitely good as long as it isn't all at once. BZFlag could be easily overwhelmed by noobs and spammers, cheaters, and other dregs of humanity.

I guess the big question then, is: What would make a server good enough to pay for the privilege of being on there? The BZFlag experience as I know it is pretty much satisfying the way it is right now. If gratis servers are still around, how would a P2P server compete? What would they do better? Ye...

Hmmm, selling bzflag might be a good way to popularize it. Appearing in stores everywhere.

Just spiff up the graphics and sell in a shrink wrapped box - people don't have to know it's free. What they don't know won't hurt them.

Hehe, I have to disagree with everybody here. I don't really believe that artificial limits on capping are a good thing: they're are more of a pain than they're worth. You can be on a really good killing spree, you have the other teams flag, you are soo close to their base, and someone leaves. Arrrr...

Do you have your Quality set to Experimental in Display Settings? If you do you might try bumping it down to High. The Experimental settings have what people like to sometimes refer to as the "plastic bubble" SW. That may be what it dropping your frame rate. If that works then you at leas...

Who says bugs have to be bad?

In the newer clients, the shockwave effects don't like my video card. The result is that I lag up really badly if someone shoots off a shockwave. This is extremely useful for me. These are a few of its benefits: A: if I fire a shockwave, I don't have to worry about people shooting back B: No one can...

In my experience, my lag gradually increases to around 500ms until there are 20 people on the server, then it spikes to over 1000ms. My advice: play when the server has few people, and be prepared to either, A: Rejoin until banned, or B: Go find another server. I should log my lag sometime and find ...

A patch is a file that describes changes to a source file. So, if you are going to compile bzflag, you can use that patch to make changes. To apply patches you use the patch program. If you use windows, you probably don't have this program.

Good luck

A bug that is..... useful

My video card doesn't like the shockwaves in 2.0.6. The result is that everytime someone fires a shockwave, I jitter really bad. This isn't a bad thing (for me at least), because it makes me harder to kill. :P There's someone on the green team who I can't seem to kill :lol-old: What I suspect is tha...

I like the set idea, and the team idea. But if I start a server, I won't trust a gui, personnaly. But that's just me. Same here. But I was thinking of doing it for newbies, so they wouldn't have so many 'how do i set up a server' questions. Of course, if you make it possible for idiots to administe...

Possible plugins

Some Ideas: I could write a plugin that kicks a randomly chosen person off of the team with more people, and then tells him to join the other team. (would be really good on stuff like pillbox) I could also write a plugin that provides a graphical interface (I think) to the server, or maybe a graphic...

Jeff is right - if you don't like geno, either don't play there, or get the server owner to change it.

No, not shell access.
Create a shortcut.
right click in a folder somewhere -> New -> New Shortcut
Create one to bzfs, right click on it, click properties, fiddle with it.

Well, could you create a shortcut to bzfs with the correct parameters? just use [drive]:\path\to\bzfs -password passwd -conf "asfasf" -world "asdf" Like for me: it would be "C:\Program Files\BZFlag2.0.4\bzfs.exe" -conf "myconf" -password "secret" -wo...

You're under windows, right? (for this server I mean)
Are you using the Start Server shortcuts on the start menu?
Start Menu->Programs (or All Programs on Windows XP)->BZFlag (whatever)->Server->(something in here)?

I could be completely wrong, but I might know what's wrong.

Vax, I think youre referring to A-Delusion's Epileptic Fit map, with moving, textured pyramids and everything else. That was quite a show, props to him for the map. Secretplace is all but dead, LaserMania is on the rise. It's the normal cycle of server popularity. It goes in seasons, usually in the...

Just keep in mind that what you (and I) remember as the "good ol' days" was when there was more emphasis on people having fun and basic gameplay, and less on features, high scores, and "bling" on the maps. Keep your server up and try to emphasize those things, and maybe the &quo...

What I think BZFlag needs is a theme - Not a large change in gameplay. Tanks shooting rubber bullets is OK and cool, and that shouldn't change. But it needs a story to back it up. As of now, you have really weird maps that lack the beauty of something like pillbox, overlord, ducati, babel, etc... (g...
