Yes, good point, time to evaluate the support for a new edition of the Riker Cup, please state your willingness to play, observe, cheer, ...

Do you want to see this happening any time around Xmas/new years?

Yeah, would be cool if it was anytime during the Xmas/New Years break..like last year.

End of December, or beginning of January.

Not yet. Typically, admins will pick up two leaders for each side and they will be given full control of the organization of the event and selection of players, subs, etc. Also, as in previous editions, the captains would be preferably people who have not been captains before. In this way, we try to make the cup more participative.

lol zac, imagine 10 aussies vs 10 euroes, you'd need to rename rikers to lag cup. anyway, it ain't gonna happen zac, even though we could probably easily get 10 players from around here on at the same time. and as for rikers, well, doesn't concern me or the rest of us down south obviously, so, whenever you have it i'll get in obs and cheer! woo have fun!

Is there a way to avoid identification problems?
We always had trouble with the list server.

There haven't been auth problems with the list server in quite some time.

I think benji 13 might have meant problems with global login. I know that was a problem with the Summer Rikers.

It is a problem with the list server design and server load. A player authentication at join requires numerous database queries and network transmissions. When forty people try to rejoin and authenticate to a server at the same time, the server can easily be overloaded with database queries. With the current list server design, numerous simultaneous player joins cannot be easily accommodated.

A solution is to have a longer countdown, and have players join gradually leading up to the starting time. That way, the load on the list server is not so great, and there is time to try multiple rejoins if a player cannot authenticate the first time.

Like joevano said, there hasn't really been much trouble lately. Leading up to the last Rikers, it took like 5 tries before every match and was a huge problem at the time. I'm confident that global auth. won't provide us with too many difficulties this time.

I think last time there may have been another CPU and/or memory intensive process running on the server (like a backup, or rsync). So, you may want to speak with brlcad/learner and coordinate with him to ensure nothing like that would be running at the time.

Well lately there haven't been 40 players on a server.
If there's no way to change the server design, a long countdown will do it again, but I always experienced this long period of rejoining as unnecessary and annoying.

How Boring! Lies!

i will happily watch the rikers cup :D

only thing i dont like is that the same players get picked every year, sure there will be 3-4 changes but they will change between players.

Well, Riker's after all is the Top 10 players from each continent, and unless most of the players decreased in skill drastically, or others increased, naturally the teams should be comprised of most of the same players. Having said that, I think the organizers of the cup try to get new leaders each year, which is a plus.

Captains of both sides have been chosen and they have agreed to lead the cup. Watch this thread for news in the incoming hours....

Now it is official, the teams will be lead wither to glory or disaster (but that is now out of our control) by:

America continent: Sphere and Constitution (gu admin)
EU continent: snick and NTH (gu admin)

get ready your engines and polish your tanks to shine....

From now on, latest news, updates, etc in dexter's page: http://rikercup.org/

PS: Due to an unfortunate typo the GU league page showed "fade" instead of "sphere" as leader. Sorry for the confusion, this was probably a product of heavy champagne ingestion by the corresponding poster.

PS2: Happy Xmas day to all from my deeply atheist soul, whether you believe or not it does not interfere with my wish that everything goes well for you and your closest ones.
