Barons can't log onto any of mana's servers

Hey guys,
Since last Wednesday morning (gmt time) we have not been able to log onto any bzf servers, not 5154, 55, or the match servers. We get "error connecting to server" message. Tracert bzf.bzflag.net supposedly has 30 hops but times out after the 20th somewhere in europe. Last hop is nh86-r7.gatewayrouter.net [89.149.218.86]
All that is greek to me and don't know if that's of any help to you IT savvy players out there. Any suggestions would be most welcome. I have left a pm here for mana, but his logins here are rare.
I've been assured that we are not banned from gu We can log onto brad, quol, longdon and fairserve gu servers.
Something tells me to blame menotume, but then again maybe quantum dot is weary of my hunting him.
Any way, what little gu skills I possess are rapidly atrophying.

Kierra, this may happen sometimes. It has happened to me once long time ago.

I am not an expert on this matter but the little knowledge I have the global picture of the problem maybe as follows:

The problem typically is that one internet router is broken somewhere in your path to bzf servers, that router directs traffic so the packets can reach destination. When a router is malfunctioning other router is chosen by removing the faulty server from the DNS tables, but DNS (domain name server) tables may take (long) time to update. You might call your ISP with the problem and they could re-route your path, which I doubt they will take the time to do unless you are a big company spending thousands of $ with them. Usually the problem gets fixed when the router is repaired or the new DNS tables get exported everywhere. In my case the problem lasted around one week if I recall correctly.

So you're getting to the router right before the server (which is probably a router at the datacenter), which makes it seem more like a firewall rule on the server itself. Shouldn't be anything that your ISP can fix.

It might depend on the protocol "Tracert" uses.

IIRC it uses ICMP (the *NIX ones use UDP by default).

So..yes it might be a ban. However I remember at secretplace firewall bans showed up by players being able to "join" (see map and own callsign at scoreboard) but with no other players shown and being unable to spawn. I guess it might depend on the setup of the server. Still my first guess would be caching issues but as you already deleted the cache..there are only few possibilities.


Kierra I suggest to try joining using a different computer using the same connection, if possible.

Let's hope waiting for mana is not like "Waiting for Godot".

We have tried with laptops and 2 different pcs and up till today no success.

Whatever it was, it is fixed for I was able to log onto bzf 54 this morning.

Sorry to hear about that. Probably a routing issue at my hoster or one of the uplinks. Unfortunately such things happen from time to time as already explained above. Luckily it's already gone away. And as far as I know none of the Barons is banned on my server.
