The ROBF team had been planning to make a gu map based on training. Currently 2/3 of us had agreed to make this map.

However we need more ideas from YOU GU players. So please post your ideas (if we all agree first)

I will keep this topic updated on updates and accomplishments on the map :-)

Please help! Thank you.

The GU league uses the map called HiX. So, GU is a league, HiX is a map...

This will be a gu training map since we are not using a HiX map. We are making stages related to gu :-)

In case it is of any help to you. I created a map for practising fighting in the corners and attacking/protecting the flag there.
I don't believe it's hosted anywhere at the moment, but you are welcome to use/edit it.
I will not assert any rights whatsoever, but given that it was based on the HIX map, it might be considered a derivative work and so may still come under the LGPL.
Probably better to be safe and just consider it so protected.

Thaank you very much for the help. My team will discuss to use it or not :)

I have edited my post above to clarify your licensing concerns.

There is no "may" or "might" about it, the license clearly states that it must remain LGPL ;)

Read the LGPL license! http://lmgtfy.com/?q=lgpl+license

1) You can totally use the map, it just has to be noted that it is LGPL.
2) The GPL is not the same as the LGPL. They share many terms but not all of them, so pointing people to the GPL is incorrect.

The main reason to get it right is the fact that HIX is shipped as part of bzflag, and the bzflag license is the only thing protecting the project and keeping it free and open.

Firing Squad modded the map, and that's perfectly fine under the terms of the LGPL and we greatly encourage it. The problem is that his wording indicated that no rights were reserved for the derived map. He was just being nice and super open and that's very understandable. If this had been 100% his original work then we'd say that the map was licensed under the public domain and be done.

But he did not start from scratch, he modified a part of bzflag. The LGPL states that any derived works must also be licensed under the LGPL. The terms of the LGPL state that all works licensed under it must state that they are under the LGPL or include the license. AKA they can't say "do whatever you want" because there are limits on the use under the LGPL, you can't change the license or close the source code.

If we had let his original wording stand, that would mean that we let someone change the terms of the license agreement for a part of bzflag. If someone did this for one part, then there would be nothing to prevent someone else from doing this to other parts, like the code itself. Then someone could take bzflag, change a few lines and sell it as a closed source product, since the public domain "do what you want" license doesn't prevent that type of use at all.

I know it's all academic and that nobody is trying to steal anything from anyone else, but in order to keep bzflag open we must protect every aspect of it and ensure that it remains properly licensed. This is why we are so strict on licensing issues.

To my understanding, you are saying we can use this map, but must keep the same LGPL liscense. R.O. Is glad to keep the original liscense, but does this effect the copyright of the map?

1) You can't make statements for author of the changes. "RO" is not a legal entity.
2) Copyright and the license go together, only the copyright holder can grant licenses for a work, so the original work (HIX) is copyright Tim Riker and licensed under LGPL, the changes made are copyright by the people that made them, but must also be released under the LGPL.

So since the derived work is licensed under the LGPL, it can be used under the terms of the LGPL (it can be used and modified by anyone)

R.0. (Reptiles Organization) it's the last name change.

R.0. has been busy lately, we stopped our projects. I will try my best to continue growing the foundation back. Please, if you are good with map making, we need more active map makers to help R0.

Well, all our map makers turned into official'ers in Reptiles. (khonkhortisan, wxyzWXYZ, alezakos) Unclelightning is busy during school year. And I am incredibly clueless in map making. So pretty much everything has to be done. We all have a picture of what it should look like.

How do I send you these sketches?
