I've been noticing this for a while...
here's the deal, When i have more than 1 PM, i look at the names, click one and reply, then go back to the index, I still have 1 unread msg, but it says you have no "New" messages, is there anyway to change it so it says "unread" messages"
I'm not sure if this is browser specific or not
Mac OS X 10.2.8

Well, you could just read all the new messages right away...

by hitting the "back" button you don't reload the index page, you just go to the cached version that still has a message.

I meant i clicked on the "forum index" link on the top right.
i didn't click back.

then you probably have a local or ISP proxy that is doing overly aggressive caching.

I Don't think that is the cause, Jeff, i believe you are misinterpreting my post...I'm not behind a proxy either...
I am saying that I HAVE an unread message, but the PHPBB doesn't recognize that i have an unread message, i believe it registers that i have clicked the Inbox once...so it thinks i may have read all of the "new" messages, which i haven't. I think this is a board issue, not something with my IP etc.
I could be entirely wrong, however.
Does this happen to any of you guys as well?

If it's a board issue, complain to phpBB - or better yet, submit a fix...
