Gaming ISP in UK

Post by Home Guard »

Virgin Media seem to have trouble with gaming traffic.
Can anyone in the UK recommend an ISP good for BZF?
Thanks

Anything but Virgin. We were with them for a while, and it really, really sucked. Poor internet, poor customer service, traffic throttling.

Try Be Unlimited, or Demon. I've had good experiences with both those providers. Be Unlimited will give you ADSL2+ cheaper than most other ISPs, (if you're in a compatible area) too.

Spazzy
Thanks for that. BE can't use my phone line unfortunately, so I'll look at Demon. I'm also thinking about Plusnet as I've heard good reports and their top service is £20pm, compared to £15 for VM - worth the extra to keep BZF going!

I've asked Plusnet how they class BZflag, and they tell me it's peer-to-peer, so I'm not sure if I would get good enough connection - does it matter if the ISP categorises the game as such?

Yes, it's their catogories that define shaping. Game > * > P2P generally. It's not p2p, while you do directly tell other people something it's still a server based game. Try to correct them.

Update: March 2011
I've changed to Plusnet and my lag and jitter have dropped. I can't be too specific because following a linux upgrade I seem to get spikes of high jitter every few minutes. I don't know if this is ISP or my PC.
BTW my router did not get on well with Plusnet so I fell back on an old one. Apart from that I'm pleased with the service and pay 2/3 of what I did with Virgin.

Were you on Virgin's cable fibre optic 50meg service or normal virgin BT reseller ADSL 8meg copper wire service ?
