ubuntu intel 945GM low framerate

Post by leviathan »

huhu bz family
after looking through so many forums and not finding any good tips, i thought i give the bzflag forums a try.

i think a lot of you players, and especially you developers and administators are using linux, so please give a brandnew mac-switcher some tips.

my problem:
switched to ubuntu 10.10, and noticed that bzflag is unplayable with any settings/configuration due to a fps of about 30-35, while on mac os i had a fps of 230

my hardware:
macbook 2,1, ubuntu 10,10, intel core 2 duo T7200,intel 945GM, 1 GB ram

my thoughts and attempts:
i found out it could be due to missing drivers for the 945GM?
could it be some settings in compiz (effects)? --> turned them all off with no success..
this command might help:

Code: Select all

leviathan@ubuntubook:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03)
and maybe this:

Code: Select all

leviathan@ubuntubook:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
289 frames in 5.0 seconds = 57.730 FPS

remember i'm new to the linux world, anything could be useful for me!
all the best, levi

The output of glxinfo would be useful as well. As far as I know, the lspci command just reads the device name from a database of PCI devices. So it doesn't mean that your system actually has the proper driver activated to take advantage of said hardware.

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe that readout indicates that you are using the open-source driver for your GPU. I'm not certain whether there is a vender-provided driver for that card, but you could try selecting the menu item System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to make sure you are using the best driver for your card.

ok now this could be a sign: i opened system->administration-> "additional" drivers (i couldn't find "hardware" drivers) and the output is this:

Image

which means in english: no proprietary (synoymous to "unfree" as i found out) drivers are used on this system.

does this ring a bell at anyone? anyway, i will now try to google in this direction, thanks for the hint!

another thought:
isn't it unual that glxgears gives me 57fps (and this was a rather high value), as well? but one has to note that the 945GM isnt a standalone GPU, it is somehow linked to the CPU (which in my opinion is negligible, because under mac OS i get rather high fps with the same hardware)

anything i could do next? but thanks so far you two!

Intel's drivers for linux are Open-Source and built into the kernel as far as I know. 57FPS isn't that fast, but vertical sync seems to be turned on. This means it will limit itself to your refresh rate (~60FPS). Vertical sync might be partially to blame for your lower FPS as well, since it would limit you to 30FPS if it could only push out, say, 45 or 50 FPS. (or 15 if it can only push out 20 or 25)

Just to confirm, does it show "Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT x86/MMX/SSE2" as the OpenGL renderer at the bottom of the screen when you start BZFlag?

EDIT: Also verify that you have all of the graphics settings in BZFlag maxed out, but with shadows, lighting, and energy saver turned off.

I have always used Nvidia cards in Ubuntu, but I believe that in general linux drivers for Intel GPUs are not as good. I did some quick googling and Intel seems to say that they do support some cards, but only through the linux distributer, so if Ubuntu does not detect it you may not be able to find a good driver for that card on Ubuntu. Your best bet would probably be to simply google around for something like "intel gma 945 ubuntu macbook", although it sounds like you've already done your research. As you are finding out, finding and setting up good drivers on linux can be a pain for some devices.

By the way, 57 FPS in glxgears does not sound that good... my MacBook Pro gets about 1,000 FPS, and my linux desktop gets about 19,000 FPS.

Vertical sync is turned on for his driver. (I added that to my post while you were writing yours ;))

This is an xorg.conf extract I forund around the ubuntu forums when I was searching for your graphics chipset. When googling for that SGI it appears most likely that it's a driver for Silicon Graphics or something like that. The extract shows that the driver you should be using is called "i810", you'll be activating it by editing your xorg.conf at the section "Device" to look something like this. If you only specify the "Driver" line xorg/randr still detects the other options to your best (as the BusID).

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM"
    Driver "i810"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" (Don't change this if it's different!)
    Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    VideoRAM 131072 (For 128MB)
EndSection
If that driver isn't installed yet try to install it by running

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
in a console or search for that package in Synaptics. If it doesn't show up there you can still download it from http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/xse ... ideo-intel and install it via the terminal or the graphical "GDebI" installer.
Constitution wrote:By the way, 57 FPS in glxgears does not sound that good... my MacBook Pro gets about 1,000 FPS, and my linux desktop gets about 19,000 FPS.
This looks fine to me with VSync, without it doesn't look too good but okay though.

yes it does

to cobra_fast:
first of all, i cant even see the xorg.conf file... i typed:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
but it shows a blank page... is this the wrong location?
secondly, but i think this isnt important until i see the config file, i dont understand this:
Cobra_Fast wrote: If you only specify the "Driver" line xorg/randr still detects the other options to your best (as the BusID).
and to your thoughts at the end: i think i got that package installed that you mean, see here:

another point:
gorgomol told me (although with a completely different gpu) that he has increased his FPS from 30 to 60 just by turning off "vsync" in the xorg.conf file, could this be the same for me? can i destroy anything by trying this? how would i do it? gorgo said i just need to add the line: vsync off...

im so glad that i am getting help here, thanks guys!

As far as I know the newer releases of ubuntu do not have the Xorg conf-file after installation. The path /etc/X11/xorg.conf is right though. But you have to create that file at first. Maybe this link can help you:

The latest releases of XOrg, which have been implemented in Ubuntu since 9.04, no longer rely on a conf file for initilization and therefore does not create one during installation. Instead, the conf file is only used when the default settings detected by the graphics driver end up needing correction.

It looks like you have the correct driver (incidentally, the i810 driver would actually be a step BACK when applied to the 945 chipsets since the i810 is intended to provide functionality for older GPUs that Intel dropped years ago), so don't worry too much about that. It's been a very long time since I've dealth with xorg.conf files for Intel chipsets (or at all, for that matter), so you'll need to ask someone else about adding the correct statements for disabling vsync.
And the lesson for tonight is:

Never underestimate the ability of a newb to expect instant success and cry "cheat!" when they don't get it. Don't hate the newb, just give them plenty of learning opportunities. ;)

seems like we have something like a consensus. to sum up the last 3 answers: i need to create a xorg.conf file and write in a statement to disable vsync, at least i could try this. right?!

one thing confuses me though: if i create that file like this easy-looking guide http://www.osguides.net/operation-syste ... u-910.html, do i get a blank file or will there be all this "sections" like "device" already be in it? or is it rather like the gpu knows what to do but if there is such a file with additional information, it will include this too?

i guess i better back up my system before this right?

one more tiny thing: i dont know if it matters but when i reduce the screen mode to "windowed" i get 59 FPS, once i go back to full screen it drops to half of it.

again thanks for all the input, keep it on!

Perhaps you should just try lowering the resolution that the game runs at. Go into Options > Display Settings > Change Video Format and pick something lower.

The instructions at OSGuide.net look reasonable as a way to get an initial xorg.conf file. Use the entire generated file.

If there is a problem using it you would just remove (or rename) the file to undo the change, so a backup isn't strictly necessary. On the other hand you should always have a backup of whatever data you don't want to lose.

changing the video format was no big of a change.. at 800x600 i had 42 fps instead of 30. and with the black stripes on the side its not really an option for me but worth trying.

i created a xorg.conf file and got totally different lines, see my device section here:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
        ### Available Driver options are:-
        ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
        ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz",
        ### <percent>: "<f>%"
        ### [arg]: arg optional
        #Option "NoAccel" # [<bool>]
        #Option "SWcursor" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ColorKey" # <i>
        #Option "CacheLines" # <i>
        #Option "Dac6Bit" # [<bool>]
        #Option "DRI" # [<bool>]
        #Option "NoDDC" # [<bool>]
        #Option "ShowCache" # [<bool>]
        #Option "XvMCSurfaces" # <i>
        #Option "PageFlip" # [<bool>]
	Identifier "Card0"
	Driver "intel"
	BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
so i corrected the "device" section like cobra_fast wrote, like this: Image
and got a black screen before i came to the login window. so i created a new xorg.conf file and replaced the broken one to get my colored pixels back..

any idea what went wrong? i guess "intel" is not the best driver so we are on a good way, but some small details may be missing/wrong.

conclusion: i need to get the correct driver for my card (i810 ?)
and i that was no help i (still?) need to disable vsync?
right?

I can perfectly tell what went wrong: You edited the "Identifier"-Line without changing it's referrences.
You would edit your generated Xorg.conf to the following:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Card0"
   Driver "i810"
   BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
   Option "XAANoOFFscreenPixmaps"
EndSection
I'm leaving out the commented lines and I'm letting Xorg decide how many useable VideoRAM we got. Good luck.

At this point, it may be easiest to ask on the Ubuntu forums how to disable synchronization with vertical refresh so that glxgears will run freely. Someone there ought to know how to do it.

@Cobra_Fast: The "Identifier" line has no modifier to the operation of the driver or equipment, it's only there in case other sections of the xorg.conf file need to associate themselves with a specific video device (such as when using a multiple display setup). It's perfectly fine to leave it as it is since no other part of the file is looking for a different specific Device ID.

@leviathan: You're black screen may come from switching your driver to "i810". By specifying it in your xorg.conf, you force Ubuntu to use that driver specifically rather than whatever driver may be best optimized. In this case, you either have a bad i810 driver, the i810 driver does not function properly with your 945 GPU (possibly), or you don't have the i810 driver on your system (also possible, though lack of driver will usually cause Ubuntu to drop to either the generic VESA driver if available or just dump you to a text console). If you insist on downgrading to the i810 driver, then make sure you have "xorg-server-video-i810" installed in Synaptic. If it's not then install it and try again. If installed, then it would appear to not work right with your graphics card.

As for the vert refresh, try:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
        Identifier "blah"
        Option "DRI" "true"
        Option "VSync" "false"
EndSection
And the lesson for tonight is:

Never underestimate the ability of a newb to expect instant success and cry "cheat!" when they don't get it. Don't hate the newb, just give them plenty of learning opportunities. ;)

This is exactly what i was saying. As he seem to have generated a Xorg.conf with a tool its more than likely the screen section (or any other) will make use of the device identifier.

First, there's also an "i910" driver which may be worth a try. Secondly, vesa should always run but not provide any acceptable 3D performance if any.

He does have that package installed, as he stated above.

Let's not lead us to hasty conclusions here. As I said, it's currently probably more of a configuration issue, not a compatibility issue.
To get more info on what happened in particular the Xorg.log (from /var/log) of possibly crashing attempts (e.g. with i810 or i910) would be useful.

Those drivers are not installed or "i810" and "i910" are obsolete names for them.

Re: ubuntu intel 945GM low framerate

Post by leviathan »

ok so these two options didn't work and i went into synaptic-packet-tool and found out that i obviously have drivers for the "i810" installed but "i910" is somehow missing in the list. see the screenshot:
Image

i still wont give up, as i feel we are on the right way, but i lost some of my high hope.
now i will wait what you hopefully can conclude about the two logs and this screenshot i took.

but, as these logs are somewhat lenghty, i would be totally fine, if some of you guys just say that its getting too hard for him continue this with me.
i dont want to waste anybody's time :/, this whole thing could end up getting more and more difficult.
best regards, levi
