Mouse Wheel Acceleration on Macbook Air

Post by kajo »

I downloaded "USB Overdrive" to modify the speed of my mouse in general and the speed when scrolling. Both worked out for example when surfing online. However, even though, I set the scrolling speed up to as high as possible, I haven't notice a change when shooting bullets on BZflag (I'm using "wheel down" for shooting). My spreads widley spread and I need to wheel fastly to make tight spreads.
I hope you can help me. Tnx

From what I understand, the "Overdrive" function works by repeating extra key/button events between raw events. Programs that read the raw mouse events directly instead of the OS-level events (which - correct me if I'm wrong - includes BZFlag) will not gain any benefit from it.
And the lesson for tonight is:

Never underestimate the ability of a newb to expect instant success and cry "cheat!" when they don't get it. Don't hate the newb, just give them plenty of learning opportunities. ;)

Well, to be honest I'm not really familiar with the technical aspect of "Overdrive". It was suggested by a friend of mine for modifying mouse settings, but what you said seems logical to me. He says that Apple uses different curves of acceleration for scrolling, so I tried to modify it...

Could you think of another way how to enhance the wheeling on BZFlag?

You might want to check your FPS. BZFlag only polls for input events once during each frame update, as I understand it. The MBA has a bit of an underpowered GPU. I've used USB Overdrive for a while to improve my mouse tracking speed/acceleration, but not to adjust the wheel speed, so I'm not sure how that works.

@Joevano I've already set the scrolling speed up to as high as possible. It works, on browsers, Skype etc, the scrolling is faster - However, it doesn't affect BZFlag.

@ Constitution So that means a higher FPS rate might help?

Correct. I have noticed that it is hard to create tight groups of shots with low FPS. Do you limit your FPS?

I've just tested it. I usually limit my FPS to 60FPS because otherwise it automatically goes up to about 900 FPS and my Macbook starts getting louder. So, I didn't notice any differences when using energy saver turned on/off, unfortunately... Still the same big gaps in my spread.

Maybe that's only when it's located within a manila envelope?

Yup, made a screenshot today on BZflag:

When I turn off my energy saver I instantly get this high frame rate and my mac is heating up.

Good one, Blast
