UDP errors

Post by Kesslar » Fri Dec 13, 2013 2:58 pm

Ok, so I have been having this problem with UDP i don't know what exaclty what it does, but I will, Ok i will get onto bzflag and start to play, but then it will kick me off of the server with the message "your end is not using UDP, turn on UDP on your firewall or router" so I have tried to just disable firewall, but it didn't work.

I don't know what else to do I am running windows 8.1 64bit system.

thanks

Net nanny is a parent control for browsers, not an antivirus. Disabling could work, but probably not.

First off, try rebooting your computer, router and modem.

Then try to find your antivirus/firewall, and make sure that BZFlag isn't being blocked. Try playing with both of them disabled.

Are you using a router? Perhaps the router was changed and is blocking something with BZ.

Copy/Paste one of the following ip addresses in your web address bar of the browser and go to that website. One of them should work and be your router's configuration. I'm not sure what part to change, but browse through it and make sure nothing is messing with BZ.

192.168.2.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.123.254

By the way, whenever you make a change, it may not be necessary, but rebooting your computer could help refresh the settings you changed. Also, when you disable or change any settings, be extra careful with what you do on the computer since you will have little security. I am no technical expert, but these are some of the things I may try to fix your problem. Just suggesting.

It is more than likely something on the computer itself. The Net Nanny program could be doing something similar to NOD32 in that it may be treating it like a web browser and filtering out UDP. BZFlag uses web protocols to look up the MOTD and access the list server (along with authentication). Because of that, some software thinks that BZFlag is a web browser and locks it down.

@ sillysir, those were not my router address but I do know it so i went into my router settings and looked for anything and everything on UDP but came up with nothing

@ Blast, so what should I do? My parents are willing to let me into net nanny to try and find what exactly is blocking it but I don't know what would block it. Do you?

You would need to read the documentation for net nanny, we are not able to provide support for it since we didn't make the software. They probably have a FAQ or something about how to get various games to work.

I was able to duplicate the issue here on a Windows 7 VM with the Net Nanny trial. As I suspected, Net Nanny treats BZFlag as a web browser (or at least it blocks non-TCP communication), and I could find no way to whitelist the application. Their Knowldgebase mentioned a method for a much older version of the software (KB article was dated 2006), but that no longer exists in the current version of their software. You will have to contact their technical support or find a different filtering product.

Hey Kess,
I have a similar problem this week trying to connect to the mofo/apocalypse server... I receive a message that mentions waiting until I connect to the UDP something something, then another message that says that I can't spawn and need to fix my firewall. I find that I can't send messages either. I can join and play on any other server/map, just not that one. I'm assuming it has to do with me being on a different network and router than my home one (I'm away visiting family for the holidays) and has built-in security features I can't access.

Or maybe they've just gotten tired of me on Apoc ;)

We're not tired of you on Apoc haha We're running a modified version of bzfs in order to prevent players from spawning or talking without UDP due to abuse. And the security features on your router may be preventing UDP from being established.
Here's my personal website and my open source projects are available on GitHub; I work on a lot of cool things.

If you were having the same UDP issues, I would think you would get kicked from other servers as soon as you tried to shoot, as that's when they do the check. BZExcess and Mofo just do the check sooner (when trying to spawn). UDP is required to play BZFlag 2.4.x. Generally, it isn't a problem with the router itself, but some software on the computer. For example, NOD32 antivirus and Net Nanny both seem to classify BZFlag as a web browser and then block UDP.

Thanks blast... the only two server/maps I have connection issues with are "Apocalypse" and "Urban Jungle" - they give me the two error messages regarding UDP and firewall.
Everywhere else plays just fine. I assumed its a network issue because it only seems to happen when I'm joined to my in-law's network; I'll be sure to update if I run into the issue once I return home. I'm running a Macbook Pro 10.6 and a Mac Air 10.9 and have the problem on both of them (again, only in this location so far); my firewall is set to allow BZflag to run & communicate normally.
