BZFLAG crash: Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Post by trpted »

At /var/log/kernel.log I got this

Oct 24 20:44:41 pc-name kernel: [29526.451905] bzflag[4274]: segfault at 0 ip 081b83b9 sp bf955df0 error 4 in bzflag[8048000+250000]
Do you have any ideas of how to fix it so this does not happen anymore?

Thank you

What operating system/distribution? What version of BZFlag? What triggers the crash, or where does it occur? Does it occur every time or intermittently? Have you tried to run bzflag in a debugger (or loaded the core dump) to try to determine where it is crashing?

It happens on the client side. I have no idea at this time how to debug the client side.

I will check the server side (what that thread of yours is about), if it happens too.

[EDIT] Nope, seems fine here.

Note: no acceleration limit has been set. Players using "mouse
enhancements" may cause problems on this server due to very high
acceleration rates which are not handled well by dead reckoning
algorithms. To eliminate this warning, set the -a switch in your
configuration. '-a 50 38' is recommended for standard-speed servers.
Higher speed servers will need higher values for -a in order to not
affect gameplay. '-a 0 0' may be used to shut this message up without
affecting any players, including those using "mouse enhancements".

I take that back.

Re: BZFLAG crash: Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Post by macsforme »

It appears that you are running outdated development code. So, even though this does not appear to be the primary issue, please update to the latest development code, re-build, and try again.

You can start bzflag in a debugger by executing something like "gdb bzflag", then typing "run<return>", then after it crashes, you can type "bt<return>" to get the backtrace of where the crash occurred.

Based on the logs you provided, it appears that you possibly do not have OpenGL support correctly configured on your system. You may want to make sure that you have drivers installed for your GPU. You might want to take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedDrivers

Ok, how does one know what driver to install?

If you need/want any other info, please post.

Thank you

Re: BZFLAG crash: Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Post by trpted »

I will check the server side (what that thread of yours is about), if it happens too.

[EDIT] Nope, seems fine here.
I take that back.

For example when I load the test.bzw file from http://www.icosaedro.it/bze/ it crashes, but other than that it is working/works.
(line 51): unknown object parameter "delay" - skipping
Note: no acceleration limit has been set.. <Snipped>
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Note I think arena.bzw from that URL too.

Now going back to that test.bzw file from that URL, if I add a pound sign in front of delay, it works. Unsure why that is and I am not to worried about it, either..

The Radeon 7000 is very old card (about 15 years), so the binary fglrx driver in today's distributions no longer supports it. So, do not try to install fglrx, it will not work at all. I'd have thought that the open source radeon driver would have been active, though, especially on Ubuntu (which does not have a separate nonfree firmware package like Debian does).

I'd advise you get an nvidia 750ti. 60w usage, plugs into PCI-e and does not require PCI-e power connectors. 2G GDDR5 as well.

#1 I thought they did..

#2 If you were to recommend a different distro that is light weight, which one would you recommend?

Some note about my question, so you can answer it.

a) I prefer one with a GUI - not command line only.

b) This is not to say that it can not be command line only by default, as long as there is/are wiki, guides, forums to help me get what I want to know/get to.

c) I prefer one that is a live CD/DVD /jump drive. This is not to say that it can not be install first..

d) If you can not recommend a light weight one with a GUI, then which one would you recommend?

Thank you

[EDIT] A simple google (or other online search engine) for nonfree firmware package Ubuntu, for example pointed me to http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywo ... re-nonfree

The non-free firmware package for Ubuntu doesn't contain your GPU's firmware though. The normal linux-firmware package does. This is in contrast to Debian where they consider more of the firmware to be "non-free".

Tzeentch, they are using a Radeon 7000, not talking about the Radeon HD 7000 series, interfaced using AGP, thus no PCI-e slots. The system probably predates the existence of PCI-e by a couple years.

wow that is old, I'd say just get new hardware and bin the old. OS on client side I found Lubuntu decent. (uses lxde as the desktop environment) so this is lightweight whilst Debian based (if you must)

I'd have to ask why support something so out of date. I estimate it is around year 2001 based hardware. DDR.. + intel Pentium 4 hints that. Newer hardware may be significantly faster and same time could save on running costs in the long run. Why not get new hardware?

Ok.

Do you suggest that with this computer I, use it as only a server for BZFlag OR use it for a different purpose (two examples come to mind: As NAT router, as a NAS) ??

Thank you

I just meant sell it, get rid of it and use something newer. I'd only use a router as a router. If you require more capabilites then simply buy a more up to date or higher spec router (i.e. Billion routers are good)

With NAS you want it reliable, I think that will be hard on such old components. And you would be limited to drive connections as well. How could you RAID it?

It wouldn't even be that useful as a router or a NAS as it's rather power hungry for the amount of performance it actually provides.
