Once the mac I just bought comes in, I can make builds and test crashes.

what does it say when they crash?

what mac do you have?

video card? CPU? ram?

what version of OSX?

are you using v1.10.8 or v1.10.6 of BZFlag, because I found that 1.10.8 doesn't work properly on OS X (10.2.6) but 1.10.6 does.

Scorch I think your ibook has hardware video issues.

you can run bzflag in a window use -window -geometry 800x600 from the command line.

If things other then BZ are crashing you, and killing the entire system, then it's something ether in your OS or the hardware. and that we can not do anything about.

yes you can do windowed, you need to go into BZFlag with terminal

Code: Select all

cd [folders before BZFlag]/BZFlag\-1\.10\.6.app/Contents/MacOS
./BZFlag -window -geometry 800x600

If you still have all the discs that came with your computer, you can test if this is the problem. One of them should be a hardware test cd that you can boot from and make sure everything is running alright. With any luck, you don't have a bad logic board, but it can be replaced for free if you still have AppleCare support.

Wow, I remember Kiki The Nanobot, that thing was so much fun....

yes kiki the nanobot it was. i think i already did a hardware check. no windowed mode doesn't work on a mac unless they canged something in 1.10.8.

dude calm down, no need to shout.

I'd just get your busted hardware looked at, or wait untill an SDL build can be made for you since your unable to build yourself.

Mac Crash

Post by worfgzr »

I've had a similar problem with this build (1.10.8 ). In fact, I've had three different incidences where BZF will either hard freeze my Cube (there's a joke in there somewhere),or BZF will crash.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason; the freeze happened when I attempted to join a server. It made the connection, but went no further. I had to force a reboot (very rare for me at least).

The quits happen while playing, again, no rhyme or reason. The last one happened while jumping and firing GMs. The one before that happened when I picked up a cloak flag. All on different maps.

Does BZF keep a log somewhere I can check?

turn off lighting

This is normal for 1.10.* as windowed mode was never implemented for that version. Try turning off Lighting on the options menu. That should stop the crashes. The problem should be fixed (both the crashes and windowed mode) for 2.0 when it is released.

Try with 10.3.7. I think that build is public now, but if not, ask me because I'm a apple beta tester. I had that same problem a few months ago, but when I updated it went fine. And assuming that your iBook didn't crash for the first few weeks when you started playing, try running a harddrive check. When you boot, hold down the Apple key and "S". And when it gives you the console, type fsck -y. If your computer has trouble with the screensavers and other games, try reinstalling the video driver. I assume its a ATI Radeon 9200, so just go to ATI's site and download the appropriate things.

You did disable lighting, yes? You need to disable lighting as that is most likely what is causing the crashes. (the fact that it's driver/card dependant is why the 10.3.7 update helped some people -- the problem is still the lighting).
