2.0.0 freezing all the time...

Post by Saturos »

I compiled the 2.0.0-release from the sources on my SuSE 9.1-laptop and played for a while without problems. But then bzflag started to freeze on nearly every server.
Most of the time I join a team and when I hit "i" or my right mouse-button and the tank lifts up out of the ground bzflag freezes right in the moment when I want to start moving. Sometimes I am able to play a bit and it freezes without any significant reason after a few minutes... the only thing I can do then is to perform "killall bzflag" to get rid of that ghost of a program. :D

Any idea what could be my problem?

I also run SUSE 9.1 and don't have any problems. I played some hours today no freese at all.
May this is a driver/hardware issue. What hardware you have and which driver versions ?

Ow, one addition: If I start it from console, it freezes, I kill it and then I look back to console, I see the following:
pure virtual method called
Maybe its important.

lspci is located at directory /sbin, but /sbin is not in a normal user path.
So you have to call it with

Code: Select all

/sbin/lspci -vv
but to output full information lspci needs root rights, so you have to start it as user root an root has /sbin in path

For the output you get "pure virtual method called" , i'm not a 3d guru ... maybee some developer can give you a hint what's going wrong.
With the information you have to collect for me in can only search if there already known issues and workarounds on your hardware/driver

intel integrated graphics are evil. make sure you have current drivers.

The outputs all looks ok no hint to a problem.
Sorry, i don't know much about the 855GM Chipset. But i searched the net a little bit and found not many problems related to 3d accelleration with this card. So the only thing you can try is to make a online uptdate (if not already done) and check if this fixes the issue.

I know now the problem... everything is fine if Track-Marks are turned on. If I kicked them off and the game started to freeze... strange but acceptable. Thanks for helping!

Just fixed the problem in CVS. It only seems to occur when
not using the depth buffer. If you have H/W rendering (aka
a video card), then I strongly encourage you to turn on the
depth buffer. It will increase your FPS, and generally make
the rendering better.

On 1.10.8 the FPS went down when turning on the depth buffer so I disabled it in 2.0.0 too. Did that change since 1.10.8?

Yes, i also noticed much local jitter and less FPS in 1.x with depthbuffer turned on and ATI binary only crap drivers .... but this is gone with 2.0.0 :)
