Wierd bzfs issues...

Post by bamf. »

Ok, here's my issue:

-I have a cable connection, 99% of the time I get 400k upload and 2mb download.
-I'm running bzfs on debian 3.0.
-The bzserver is using port 5155.
-I have a linksys firewall forwarding ports 5155 & 5156 to the debian box
-I also have a win2k pro pc. The only ports forwarded to the pc are 17200 - 17220 (for bzflag client play).
-I've been testing the bzserver running on the debian box for about 2 weeks. I've had up to 10 players on at once and lag looks great, gameplay is stable.

Here's the kicker: Normally I leave my win pc up and running all the time with an additional software firewall running on it. But recently, I've been shutting it down when not in use for addtional security. When it's shutdown the bzserver running on debian acts bizzare, lag shoots way up for all players, packet loss starts.
I don't see why the win pc, when it's up and running, makes the bzserver running on debain work wonderful. When it's shut down, bzserver on debian goes beserk.
Remember, I have no ports required for bzfs forwarded to the win pc, they are all forwarded to debian.
As an additional test, on the linksys firewall, I opened up the debian box to dmz and experienced the same behavior.
Could it be the linksys router? I know it's cheap, but could the NAT be buggy?

I have had a bunch of weird issues with linksys both in playing through one and servering through a linksys box i almost think you have to have that be the dmz computer for it to work nicly but that is opening the box up to alot more ports then what you would want.

Update...

Post by bamf. »

Just for sh*ts and giggles, I updated the firmware on the linksys router. Seems to have done the trick. I have the same setup as before, ports 5155 & 5156 forwarded to the debian box and nothing bzfs related to the win2k box. Thanks for all your (isfry) comments and anyone who bothered to read it.

Fiber, wasn't Linksys the stuff that got you into trouble before also?
