2.x Poor frame rate on Mac

Seeing anywhere from 25 to 50 fps (depending on server) on 2.x using ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (reasonably high-end gfx card). Note also system details at the bottom.

1.10.8 gives me anywhere from 100 to 150 fps.

Any suggestions what to do? Why has this dropped so drastically in 2.x? I've tried various display settings, all with little or no change.

How can I find out how man fps I am getting? Is there some command I haven't heard of?

Press T and FPS will be displayed in the upper left corner of the orange target box.
