pretty sure thats a hardware malfunction. Its probally your graphic card.

If we are going to help, we need information. What is your operating system, what is your graphic card, what driver version is it running. and if you are using windows, is directX up to date.

Thats what we are going to need to run a proper diagnosis.

Try this: Right when you start the game, go to Options > Display > Change Video Format. Try selecting a format less than the one it is currently set to.

how did you update your driver? Was it with windows update? if so, you are going to want to delete that driver and get the current one from www.nvidia.com to find out what version you have of directX, go to run, and type dxdiag

good luck.

If you get this message on your monitor, it's using a combination of settings with a horizontal refresh rate that it's unable to use.

Delete your BZFlag preferences file or just the line that says "set resolution" (scroll down a bit to find it). The file is located at:

%UserProfile%\My Documents\My BZFlag Files\2.0\config.cfg

(%UserProfile% is a valid variable in Windows to define your current user folder)

For example, mine says

Code: Select all

set resolution "1024x768 @100Hz 32 bits"
Also, nVidia drivers (chipset, not card manufacturer) add additional controls and settings in your Display Properties, under Advanced. Make sure your system knows which refresh rates and resolutions are known to work and which ones don't.

Blaser, open it with something like "Notepad".

I assume you're double-clicking on it. If so, next click on "Select the program from a List" and choose "Notepad".

I use wordpad. Also look at the manual that came with your monitor if you dont have one go to the manufacters website and compare it the settings in the nvida contol center. You can also compare in the options menu and see if BZ is getting it right. Also you can try and right click on the icon click properties and click compatibitily and play with those settings. As far as direct x goes go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx
and get directx 9c and just reinstall it. Also go to nvida and do the same they may have a updated driver. Let us know if any of this helps.

I know a great diagnostics test!

Start > Run > type "dxdiag" > Save All Information

Then just open the file you saved and make it an attachment or something.

First RPG's way should work.

Second, Deverish was correct.
The refresh rate of the screen is to high.
(255 is the highest I've ever heard of......)

If RPG's way doesn't work then try setting the screen size to
the smallest in your config file.

It should be the middle one (800x600) at most.
The higher you get the more RAM you use and the more chance you get
at freezing BZFlag.

And don't give me all that stuff about "My RAM can handle it"
If you don't know what it does to your computer and how to fix
it then don't even make it where you have to worry.

Wireless networking cards are generally slower than wired networks.

I have the same problem with an WinXP-System.
I am running a GeForce 6800GT with the newest drivers and Directx9.0c.

BZFlag always ignores what the config says, I try it with 1280x1024 @75hz or lower, but the programm always want to use 150hz and my monitor does not like that!!!

I have tested a linux version with a Knoppix-DVD, that runs, but there I have the lag-problem, that all can shot at me, but I hit noone...

TD-Linux
please don't make statements that are totaly untrue.

1) don't reinstall windows. more then likely the OS just dosn't know what your display card is.
2) you can pick the refresh in your config and set it to something reasonable
3) you can run in a window ( there is a shortcut for it ) to get to the settings menu.

DirectX is used for many things. While it is true that OpenGL is used for 3d rendering. Windows builds do use DirectX to set the screen size, and refresh, as well as sound and input.

Make sure you have the current version of diect X, the current version of your video drivers, and your montiro is set correctly in the display controll pannel.

Any problems with those can cause BZ to not know that some settings are invalid for your display set up.
