Problem with graphics

The problem I am having is with lines appearing in the place of words when I turn on BZFlag. I suspect this has to do with my graphics card, but I want to make sure my assumption is correct.

Any ideas?

Many questions need to be answered.
What version of BZ?
Did this happen in earlier versions?
Make sure your video drivers are updated.
Windows? Linux?

I had the same with 2.0.8, and a simple update of the video driver fixed it. I had also noticed that if you join a game, then go back to the menu, it clears up. That requires some knowledge of how the menu is setup, so I'm not sure if you could do that.
