How do you install bzflag in linux???
This is what I tried:
1. I have just installed Ubuntu linux and downloaded the latest bzflag (bzflag-2.0.8.tar.gz) from sourceforge.net.
2. This was unpacked to create a folder bzflag-2.0.8
3. sudo -s to get to root mode
4. I copied the commands from /home/mickeythecat/Desktop/bzflag-2.0.8/package/linux/install.linux into a termal window and then got error messages.
There must be an easier way that I am missing.
Ideas?

bzflag-2.0.8 should be shipped with Ubuntu I think. Try synaptic to install it.

I just checked the Synaptic Package manger and it is not in there. I do have the latest ubuntu version 6.10 that was just released this month, so it must not be in this version of ubuntu. It still seems like I should be able to install it myself from the files on sourceforge.net - so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Being new to Linux I have to admit I was somewhat confused as to which file to download from sourceforge. Are all 3 of these files below the same data just a different format? And once you download one (and unpack it) what exactly should you do to install. (The windows version was very easy - I guess I just got spoiled).
I actually switched over to Linux for the sole reason that my win98SE kept crashing when playing bzflag - so this is obviously frustrating!

BZFlag is in the "universe" repository in Ubuntu, do the following to enable it:

OK finally got this to work.
To Install BZFLAG on Ubuntu Linux:
1. DO not download anything from sourceforge.net (like you do for windows)
2. Add extra repositories to Ubuntu linux by opening from your Ubuntu top menu:
System / Admin / Synaptic Package Manager
3. In the Synaptic Package Manager, select Settings / Repositories
4. Add extra repositories. I added 4 based on info from this link:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy ... positories
The last post says you just need the "universe" repository.
5. Once you add the extra repository, then you can select the bzflag package in Synaptic Package Manger and "mark for installation" from top menu.
6. Select the "apply" checkmark on the top Synaptic Package Manager toolbar.
7. That is it. To run, open a terminal window and type bzflag.
Good luck to all - I am going back to playing.

I will say with absolute certainty that BZFlag does not depend on any libraries in Multiverse, backports or the Commercial repositories.mickeythecat1 wrote:The last post says you just need the "universe" repository.
I may have misunderstood you, which would make this part of what I'm saying quite ironic, but please refrain from posting guide information when you have no idea what you're talking about.
Ubuntu has a huge problem with people writing guides who clearly don't understand the steps they are taking in order to get from point A to point B. It either causes users to jump through unnecessary hoops to do a simple task or seriously mess something up. This is actually what made me switch back to Debian, I got the feeling that most Ubuntu community members knew significantly less than I did about GNU/Linux (and I'm a pretty timid desktop user).
