A patch is a file that describes changes to a source file. So, if you are going to compile bzflag, you can use that patch to make changes. To apply patches you use the patch program. If you use windows, you probably don't have this program.

$ man patch
should probably give you a good idea on how to use it :)

Note that patches have to be applied to the BZFlag source code, and then it has to be compiled. So, it won't work if you are using binaries.
