Bzflag Improvement Committee

Post by Sevoma »

Latley, there has been some events (cheating) going down in Bzflag.

They up coming version 2.1 is supposed to be more resistant to cheating.

To improve this release, I have come up with something called the Bzflag Improvement Committee. It is a place where people who want to help out post their ideas of what bzflag should be.

Right now, we are concentrating on a anti-cheat system.

Please come check it out and register:

http://sevoma.net/bzflag/index.php

You can post as a guest, but if you are interested, please register (preferably with your bzbb forum name).

Thanks, Sevoma

EDIT:
There seems to be some misunderstanding.
The forum linked is just a place for ideas and recommendations. Eventually, good ones will be selected, edited, and compiled into one. Then, it will be sent to the developers to consider.

anti-cheat

Post by -shadow- »

I think the system should allow admins to set the server to allow cheaters or not.
mabye make cheating mandatory on the server.
believe it or not, there are admins who allow and recomend(on thier server) cheating.

shadow, that is not an option, this is an open source game and the server has no way of determining wether or not a player is using a cheat client

Yes. That is a very good point. Mabey it should be enabled by default, but can be optionally disabled.

Well, it is, me and someone else is working on a 2.0.x patch. The code is there, we just have to get it to work with bzfs instead of BZFlag. (I will not mention the other person's name for fear of inpersonation)

I don't think you understand. There will be some protection against cheaters. If you take a look at the website linked, you will know what we mean.

It can be optionally disabled if a server owner wants people to cheat on the server.

Erm, don't we have an enhancements forum for this? :| I fail to see the need for a separate community to handle this stuff.

This focuses on major problems, not the gameplay and things like that. This allows us to get right to the problem and work on it. This forum is run differently also. The people on it are people that want to help.

Guys, I think that the devs know quite perfectly what is needed to be done to improve the stability(is that the right word?)of the game.

As l4 said, what is the point of this?
Games don't make people violent, lag does.

Yes, but the Devs don't have a "plan". Jeff has even told me they just do what they want basically. (taken from context)

This is at least a good place to talk about anti-cheats and other stuff.

There's people here that help too. I think the devs have it pretty well figured out what they want to do.

There are several issues regarding detecting cheats, most notably lag. Lag can make a person appear to be cheating yet they are perfectly fine. Because of this, I have a hunch it can be a difficult task to create a perfectly flawless anti-cheating system, and because BZFS can't go around accusing innocent people of cheating, it can therefore be difficult to create a usable anti-cheating system.

But then again, I am not an expert in networking and am only relying on what I have experienced and what I hear.
