Yes, download a free IRC client, connect to irc.freenode.net and join #bzflag and/or #bzchat. :)

also if you had read the error it gives you all the info you need about why and how to get a real client.
Sorry, web-based IRC access has been temporarily disabled due to a security vulnerability.
Please use a real IRC client.
See http://irchelp.org for more guidance.

You're on Windows I'm assuming, mIRC is a good choice for IRC client. http://www.mirc.com/

If you feel mIRC is complicated and has just way too many buttons... try XChat. It makes the IRC experience less complicated then it needs to be. Plus it color codes everything nicely and is easy on the eyes. Plus you can have it automatically log you on and direct you to a channel fairly easily also. XChat for Windows however is not free but not that very expensive.

Another alternative is to use Gaim2beta, completely free. There are many tutorials on how to use it for IRC. As stated above, Google is your friend. Some people complain about it (*cough* tropican8, l4m3r) but it gets the job done if all you want to do is simply chat. That and its not terrible difficult to use.

Cheerio.

Like mentioned above, it you use a mac or anyone else out there, there's a handy extension called Chatzilla which works wonders, which in my case is the best irc for mac os x compared to all the apps that are 30 day trials :/ but it looks like you have a good deal of help :)
