Can anyone recommend tutorials for map making?

Post by adameros »

I DL'd blender and the BZF plugin and started trying to make a map, but after a couple hours I was pretty frustrated trying to figure out how to move things around, figure out scale, etc.

A text tutorial would be good, a video (youtube?) one would be great.

I personally wouldn't recommend blender for a starting mapper.
I still use BZEdit:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bzflag/ ... t%20win32/

And then after I save the .bzw I add more complex additions (spheres, ect...) by editing the map in notepad.
Hope that helped!

Wings3d is easier to use (or so I hear) and has built in support for BZFlag files

Well I was just suggesting something for newer map makers,
I've been fooling around with bz maps for a long time now and I still use bzedit :D
I have tried wings though - w/no success I think I try it again...

Just reading other people's simple maps is the best way. None of the makers are intuiative so it's not easier in a GUI, and the text is more powerful anyway.

joevano is correct. The learning curve is easier in Wings3D than Blender. However, once you have figured Blender out (which could take awhile), it is better.
I still use Wings3D, just because it is so easy.

Whichever you choose to use, I recommend going through a couple of tutorials (not BZF specific tuts, just pertaining to the program in general)

I learned to use Wings Here: http://www.geocities.com/paulthepuzzles/aardvarks.html
Here is a cool technique in Wings: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wings_3D/T ... d_a_center

Hope that helps.
