.bzw is just another extension for world files, which are only text, so no, they can be opened with a text editor as well. As for the Linux version of BZEdit, I've heard compilation problems with it, so I am not sure if it can be compiled, but there is a makefile included.
you'll have to find out how to get it for what ever brand of *nix you use. I'll probably be part of a GTK package. Best of luck, I have yet to see anyone except the origonal author get linux BZ edit to build.
Try BzfEd. BzfEd runs under the GNOME-2.x / GTK+-2.4 environment on Linux, and uses OpenGL / gtkglext for visualization. BzfEd is based on bzedit 2.1 source code by David Trowbridge, Dan Kuester, and Jeff Myers.

I have Suse 9.2. I see about making rpms and updating the makefile to support rpms. If you do make rpm FC3 and if it's ok with you, I would like to host the download at bzfed.org.
