Killing phrase

Currently when you are killed you get a message along the lines of "shot by blah (some address) red team". I would like to see an option for giving the killed person a personalised message instead, such as "you have been squashed by The Hammer" or "you were caught by Mr Fisherman" (if the killers name is The Hammer or Mr Fisherman respectively). I think it would add some more fun into the fray.

LittleLep was shocked by Bambino's Shock Wave

It's basically changing the text on saying how you died

LittleLep was destroyed by Bambino's Guided Missle (current)

"fried by my laser" etc.

He just was wondering if you could change those (yes you can)

Patches welcome :P

This one probably wouldn't be welcome.. I don't see how this would be useful at all, nor worth the effort to implement.

I agree with blast, what you are asking for is a feature that basically automatically TAUNTS a player when you shoot them. The messages that are there now are mostly to inform people who has done what with what flag.

Personalizing the message turns it into a direct attack against the person, just an event that happens in the game.

I can see boatloads of abuse cases for this.

So can I. A rude player could set all the messages to have various curse words in them. I think it's probably best to leave the saying of "Patches welcome!" to the developers.

Uhhh... Blast and JeffM ARE the developers (as well as others)...

I was actually saying the part about letting devs say patches welcome to LittleLep. I'm pretty sure he's not, and I wasn't saying Blast and JeffM aren't...

Actually telling people that a patch is welcome when it isn't is kinda crappy. If they did do the work and submit it, it would be for nothing. Better to tell them sooner then later.

"Patches welcome" is one of the worst things to say in open source development, as it is basically a brush off. It's much better to discuss the idea and try to get everyone to understand why it is not something that would be desired in the game.

I see your points, but people get abused anyway, and some people have rude callsigns so it's going to be no different. i just thought it could add another level of fun to the game. Besides when did being shot by someone stop being personal?

But you guys are Dev here, your the ones who have to like or dislike. No problem if you dislike.

Thanks

When I shoot someone, it's not because I don't like that person. It's just because he could shoot me, so it's better to end that possibility.

The only way I can see this being a possibility is if there were an option on the other end to disable it. So you would have the option to receive personalized messages, but wouldn't be forced to. And it would start disabled. But it's not worth the effort.

I think that personalizing these messages isnt a good idea.

AD Epoch
I see what you mean about current abuse but why add a whole nother level of it? I find that extremely pointless.

Ephraim
I agree. If a setting via the client was able, I would have no problem with the topic. Seeing what people have to say is fun, but gets out of hand when abusive...

I understand, but still I can dream of what I'd like to say to them... i guess....

I think personalizing messages is a good idea, but in the end it will just get out of hand
