Admit it, while most computers support opengl, not all. Since bzflag is a game of low system requirements to begin with, it would be nice if a software renderer was coded so that bzflag can be run in systems like the lemote yeeloong 8101b, one of the few computers the fsf comes even close to recommending.
There are already software implementations of OpenGL, such as Mesa. However, it's not going to run well, and especially slow on a system with a slow CPU. Slow computers without hardware accelerated OpenGL really aren't our target.
