High-Contrast / Cool-looks texture pack

Post by Dutchrai »

I zipped the custom-textures I like to use and uploaded them to my website.

I made them such that they look nice, while at the same time they would enhance visibility. Rogue tanks are actually yellow :-) and much easier to spot. The whole world feels less dark too. Especially the bricks I like, I feel they blend better.

You can download the pack from the Shell Shock - mods page

It took me a little bit to get it to work, because for some reason I had my data directory configured to something weird. Once I had it up though, the first game I played I had two winning streaks of 8+ kills, which is sort of a personal best. I think it's more luck than anything else though.

I'm not sure if I'll stick with this - it was refreshing but not as fancy as I like my graphics. But it was a nice job regardless.

That reminds me of a time I tried to modify my graphics... oh god... i changed the hues on all of the tank skins so all of the tanks appeared as a different color as they actually were... I don't know what i was thinking then. The point is don't do what I did, and nice job Dutchrai

I like the ground/pyramids/boxes/caution textuers, but the textures for the tanks make them look too 'old school'. I think comibining the old tank textures with the ground/pyr/box/caution high-contrast textures will make the game look great!

Hey can the textures have an alpha transparency channel? That would be awesome.

.. I wonder if that would allow you to see through buildings - which I'm sure would be cheating, but if the game allows it it's better to find out sooner than later. Anyone know?

Kinda like the 'old-school / no-camouflage' look on the tanks. Simple, pure and highly visible. Honestly, who wants enemy tanks to be camouflaged? :D :D :D I want to see them before they see me!

Lol...well, I simply figured that if BZFlag officially allows tweaking the radar, it is also ok to enhance visibility in the real world as well.

Hmmm.... according to my knoweldge of PNG's (which isn't much) they can be partially transparent. I better try this, could have some fun times!

EDIT: I tried in many diffenent ways making it transparent, but in BZFlag it was always at 100% opacity. Guess it doesn't work. Phooey.

Scorch: check the options in the default menu of BZFlag :-) Tweaking the radar in my book. Adjust bullet size, adjust bullet trails, colors, enhanced radar, radar size, transparrency....tweaking.

Hmmm this is pretty cool I installed it just now. It's a little bright, but I can set brightness down. Very nice, but will take some getting used to.

I noticed you don't have a zoned grass texture in your pack. I guess I'm getting picky. I changed the hues on the previous grass to get a purple-looking scheme. I'll e-mail it to you, cuz the attachments have never been up. :D :) :(

What was that silver thing that just flew past my window at a very high speed?

In your config file:
set blueradar "0.5 0.5 1"

(default is 0.08 0.25 1)

in 2.0, you'll also be able to specify
by the color names in the standard
X11 rgb.txt file.

ex: set blueradar powderblue

Tx RPG, will release an updated pack soon with the zoned texture as well. Forgot about that.

Since I'll do an update...do you want some 'mild' form of texture on the tanks or not? Just wondering...still want to keep the tanks bright of course.

The pack has been updated now. Changes are:

- added a texture for the zoned floor (tx RPG)
- tweaked all colors just a little (yellow/green less bright, hunter=orange, blue and purple look nicer now)
- added a text file to make the radar colors identical to the new tank colors.

If you already downloaded the pack, I advice to download the update. It's really slightly better.
Go here to get it: http://shellshock.bzflag.bz/coolbits-mods.html

If you just want to tweak your radar, these are the color settings that are identical to the brighter tank textures:

set redradar "1 0.44 0.44"
set greenradar "0.31 0.82 0.31"
set blueradar "0 0.63 1"
set purpleradar "1 0.5 1"
set rogueradar "0.94 0.94 0.38"
set hunterradar "1 0.75 0.4"
set rabbitradar "1 1 1"
(all these values are included as a text file in the texturepack)

Paste them into your BZFlag config file.

Hope this helps.

One final improvement, just implemented. Changed the 'boxwall' texture from the standard red to a more brownies-stone type of look. Now there's no more red tanks blending in with the buildings.
