Other targets

Post by The Purple Panzer » Fri Jan 28, 2005 5:11 pm

I was thinking about the old Battlezone game, and there were targets other than tanks - originally saucers (which just gave you points, otherwise couldn't harm you) and missles (which could kill you). One game variant had helicopters - you could kill them when they came low enough to shoot at you.

How about other kinds of targets in BZFlag, which would give you points?
These could be infantry, pedestrians (I'm an old Boston driver), saucer-like targets, decoys looking like real tanks, parts of buildings (very hard to get to, or requiring trick shots), supply trucks (that look, say, like fuel trucks). In CTF these code have team associations too.

The Purple Panzer
what point would there be in hiting them? Scoring is so wacked now anyway it would just skew it even more. It would make it not be bzflag. It would make it be a shooting gallery.

And I think you may want to read the Open Combat info :)

The point

Good point, what would be the point? In the original game, if
you tried to go after a saucer, it would cause you to turn in such
a way as to give the machine's tank a good shot - so you had
to trade off points for vulnerability.

In BZFlag, it might be used in a Capture the Flag variant, in which you had to go 'knock down the other team's ducks' or some such thing. Of course in real life tanks do sometimes go after objectives (other than the other tanks), with the intent to destroy them. Would it be sufficiently different from CTF to warrant the effort? I'm not sure, but I think it could be - for example, once could imagine a sort of "Gemini target", so that you had to hit both within a short time frame (requiring teamwork).
