Got Shot By...

Post by RPG »

How would you like this?

When you right click to see the details of the nearest
tank in your piont of view, BZFlag displays "Looking at
(player) (team) with (flag)". When you get shot, it
only says "Got shot by (player) (team)". When you get
shot, many times you'd like to know what flag the
person who shot you had. Could you add the flag that
the person that shot you is carrying in the "Got shot
by..." message? It would look like this: "Got shot by
(player) (team) with (flag)". And of course, if they
were holding no flag the flag part wouldn't be
displayed. It would be a nice change so people wouldn't
have to frantically look at the scoreboard when they
get shot and try to find the player that shot them and
then see their flag.

I submitted it to Sourceforge to be processed. :D ( http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=de ... tid=353248 )

This pretty much already exists, at least for certain flags. Here's just a few more memorable ones:

IB ("didn't see"), MG, ("swiss [cheese?]"), SR, ("flattened"), etc...

They don't have the wording set for each flag, at least not yet. It would be nice to add wording for flags that otherwise don't have a special shot. Ex: WG, "Got shot by a flying Dervish" ~or~ ST, "Got shot by a stealthed Dervish". The "a" makes it kinda funny. :)

Still, I think putting up the flag they had gives too much away. It's more fun to remember the wording and associate it with a flag.

I would rather have the aforementioned way. I don't even wanan put my eyes on the chat section to know what I was killed with.

It's just easier for the Got SHot By messsage to tell you what flag the player had than to look at the scoreboard and find his name (which is hard when it's a 15+ player game) and see what flag he had, and sometimes the flow of messages coming into the chatbox is so much that you can't pinpiont the message that says you were killed.

I liked what the old Pie In The Sky map had, whenever u got killed, the server displayed a message about the person killed and who killed them. Ah good times, good times.

Heheh, yeah, the ol' Pieinthesky server was awesome. I don't play much anymore; homework, preparing for final exams and all that ;)
Does the walker choose the path or does the path choose the walker?

Does anyone check the feature requests? I thought sourceforge was the best place for my official announcement of the great enhancement...

Just a note on my part...

I changed "shot myself" to "You shot yourself! Dumb tail"

This took five minutes to compile.
(two seconds to find and change)

So, I was looking at the wording like Deverish was talking about and found that most of it uses pre-set variables.

Find the right variable and just type this in "Shot by " + gotShotBy; to
"Shot by " + gotShotBy + " with " + gotShotByFlag;
(this would output on the screen "Shot by BinarySpike with L"
WARNING I'M STILL NEW TO CODING SO THE VARIABLES ARE NOT CORRECT!!!

The hard part would be the gotShotByFlag variable.
(I'm not sure if it exists...)

I'll put this on my things todo list for small code adds to bzflag and bzfs.
(I'm working on a camper revenge thingy right now)

Sounds like you found it in the code, binary. :) Nice job. Feel free to mod the client and have fun with it. I'm sure there's no unfair advantage in knowing what flag someone was carrying when they hit you.

Yup, many people new to the community probably fail to look and/or understand the use and tools available for a sourceforge.net project. No one's fault, just a general oversight by many new players I'm sure.

Although there wasn't much difference between a player and a coder when BZFlag was first released, the maturity and stability of the project allows a gap to grow between the players and those interested in the source files.

I know I didn't deal much with C++ when I first got interested in BZFlag. I still don't (I use C# and VB more often), but at least with the help of some of the devs I quickly learned how to use CVS and work with build options in my MS VC++ environment.

Are you being sarcastic?

I mean... If somebody hit you with a SW you'll know it.
If somebody hit you with L you'll know it.

If somebody hit you with W then what's the point?
Yeah, they have W... So what if you now know what they have?
If you look at score board you can easly know...
This is just faster...

(now if some dev could point me in the direction of shot fired messages and the flag variable...)

No, I wasn't being sarcastic. Notice the lack of smiles after that sentence. I was being serious, and I'm encouraging him to experiment with it.

Yesterday I had the misfortune of playing BZFlag 1.7 because the machine I was on didn't have anything higher. It annoyed me to no end to see "Got hit by shot" with no details easily visible. This is a similar situation - it would be comparatively trivial to add in the flag of the killer, and save the player a little repetitive aggravation.

Also, am I the only one who would like to see the killer highlighted on your radar for a few seconds? And perhaps the actual display of the tank would turn white during that period of time as well. I mean, on the battle field you don't really care what a person is named, you care if he's the guy covering you, or the one covering the choke point.

I wouldn't want the screen to go blank. It can be usefull to carry on seeing the battlefield... (For example: To see where the guy with ST who just shot you is heading...)

I was thinking the same thing, I just didn't want to make my enhancement sound unreasonable enough that no dev would ever attempt it.

All I would ever want would be for the top message to say the same thing in the bottom chat window. It would make things much simpler.
