smoke and mirrors ( effects system, big on the images )

Post by JeffM »

just some simple screenshots of the new effects system

Spawn effect ( poof with the pop )
Image

and it's even in team color

smoke puffs when you shoot
Image

they are only enabled in high res or experimental mode.
and if you REALY don't like them you can turn them off in your local config.
They are prety subtle tho.

next will be better death explosions, a rico effect, jump landing effect, and a new shockwave.

Dying tank

I can't see any of the stuff Jeff is on about in his screens except when a blue tank spawns and their is this weird blue thing around it...

I don't see a "Spawn effect ( poof with the pop )" in the first or any smoke puffing when you shoot.
:(

And as for the spawn thing I can see, I don't like it, it looks odd... too sci-fi. :(

sci fi? :? not what came to my mind...

But I like it. It gets my vote! heck, it got all the barons vote. I'd like to see the new shockwave too!.

May be give it a more EMP "look". Electric arcs, static. etc, the cool stuff :)
Beware! I'm going to clone myself and spread those clones all over the world!

I had to load each image seprately.

Anyway, Nice work.

When I get a fast computer I'll probably use them :)

Whatever it is I don't much like it. :(
And I still think its sci-fi...

What would be good is if suddenly a pool of light appears on the ground, and the tank falls out of the sky...
Exactly like at the start of the "Mr Bean" episodes (the real one, not the cartoon...) :D

Two other spawn effects:

Cone
Image

and Rings (think Stargate, that's how they're animated)

All of this stuff is optional and you can choose which effects you want for which events.

I like them all except for the die one. I like exploding tanks better. The new explosion looks too much like the spawn one.

I would like the explosion effect to be visible when you are inside it, though.

I have an idea for the shockwaves. In Star Wars Episode II, Boba Fett (I think? The bounty hunter guy with the clones) is being chased by Obi-Wan, and he releases two canisters. They explode and rings shoot out from them, destroying everything in their path. The sound is delayed, and sounds really weird. How about somethng like that, or something that looks less like bubbles from a bubble bath?

Oh yeah, your radar looks different on the images you posted. Did you change anything with it?

you were warned ( in the topic ), get a real net connection :)
the effects don't task CPU much at all, it's just a couple more faces drawn.

Yeah cus teleporters arn't scifi. Nor are jumping tanks, or things that can pass thru solid mater, or huge laser weapons..... :) what setting do you think bzflag is set in? Fantasy?

me1
you get 2.0.3b7 or later for a client

http://my.bzflag.org/builds/2.0.x/bzflag-2.0.3b7.exe

as DTR stated, it's all optional.
There is an effects menu where you can turn each effect on or off ( or all off ), and choose what effects you want for what actions.

screen shots don't really do them justice, they are all animated.

To me, jumping tanks are not sci-fi, teleporters don't look sci-fi to me, what makes a laser sci-fi?
To me, BZFlag is set in a regular world (Except on most of LouMans maps) except with jet thrusters or whetever to push them up and matter transferers...

But so long as I can trun of the spawn and die effects that I said looked sci-fi, I will be happy.

well I would think that the fact that they are all science... and ficton would make them science fiction :)

We interperet scifi differently then.
Because EVERYTHING has to involve science somehow... So according to you, anything fictional is scifi. :P

I had a good idea on a day I was lookin for things to do to my map.. Is it possible to have layered fog or clouds? It would be nice to have like an abject or somthing to cover the bottom of the map and leave the top area open....

You can turn off the shot rings for shots coming out of your tank, but keep them for all the other tanks. I did that because the shot smoke started getting in my viewing range :).

To do that, go into Options > Effects > Local Shot Effects > None

A tip for posting large pictures that don't
compress well as PNGs, use JPEGs.

Code: Select all

du
15692 ./png
1820 ./jpg
The converted jpgs (75%) can be found here:
