You do, if you dont put a space in.

Code: Select all

:)
= :)

When you click the smiling smiley, it puts this into the message box:

Code: Select all

 :)
So its the same as typing that in yourself...

He means in BZFlag... if you type with "n", "m", "." or ",".

Oh, and I dont like the idea because:
1) ASCII-art rox!
2) There are different font-sizes... for some the smileys would be way too big (for example if somebody writes with 9point) and for some they would be too small.
3) It would destroy the console's look imo... your view would be focused on the smileys and it would be hard to read the text (somebody gets what I mean? :? ).

Nah you can type your own smilie. Putting them in the game would lag it up.

I do not like pictures and too much color in simple message. They add nothing. The game would not benefit.

Not if they were just client sided representations of the ascii.

But I don't like the idea either for different reasons. In my opinion there is often too much unnecesary chit-chat in-game. The console should be for coordinating actions first and foremost followed by other quick messages such as apologies for TKing. Other talk in team or CTF games in particular makes it harder to coordinate your actions because of informational overload.

I think adding graphic emoticons will only encourage the unnecesary chit-chat further.

Emoticons are used to help convey your tone of voice, and can help distinguish what your feelings are, such as if your really ticked you just got tked, three times in as row, or if you just find it funny.

For some reason, pictures do a worse job of conveying this to me for some reason. I also tend not to feel as respectful to those who use pictures as to those who use just ascii in forums. Perhaps it's because of experiances with people who think

"LOL     :x :) :) :( :( :lol-old: :lol-old: :lol-old:  !!111!onehudnredone!!111"

as meaningful conversation has just left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Plus ascii offers many more combinations of displayable emotions.
