I am not a programmer so I don't know what would be involved in implementing this idea or even if it is practical:

I think it would be very useful if there was a provision to implement some sort of procedural texture function into maps. To be able to give a set of instructions on how to make a texture and have the client generate that texture seamlessly onto an object at game time. Maybe this would be too resource intensive and feature bloated. I don't even think it would need to be in the same class as Renderman or Poser, probably just somewhat primitive.

so... pretty much custom skins per map?

it's a good idea, but i can see some mapmakers going nuts with it :roll:

I can see where the idea is coming from, but considering the number of existing ways to create procedural textures I think a little unnecessary. Also dev lives would then become a series of requests for 'this noise generator engine'. I just want normal and specular mapping, maybe env to.
