I was asked recently, but don't really know the answer to... What would you say are the minimum specs to run a public server, and recommended specs? The main resources in question are processing power/cpu clockrate and RAM.

processing power/cpu clockrate and RAM.... very low, you could run a server on a very primitive computer. I know that there are currently servers running on a 233mhz system, and it works just great.
The key is the internet connection. You need fast upload speeds. A DSL connection might be acceptable with a 10 player limit. Most cable-type internet connections have variability in their speeds, and are not good for game servers. Anything better than DSL should be just fine.

Ah, I see. It was just a question someone had asked me. In my case, I probably have much more than needed as far as resources for the server. 1ghz processing power dedicated (small slice of much more) and 2GB of RAM dedicated. This is running on a 12mbit upload/12mbit download internet connection (slice of 100mbit upload/download). Thank you for the answer.

Note that using plugins and high detailed maps may increase RAM usage of BZFS by a significant ammount.
Although I've rarely seen a BZFS using more than 30 MB.

Hi

Besides that you should keep in mind, that the bandwidth required largely depends on the server configuration. Extras like jumping, super flags, number of shots, GM add to the data rate per player. Then the overall data rate will grow exponentially with the number of players. Complex, popular servers with lots of players all day easily produce monthly traffic of 10-20G.

20GB/month would be a medium sized/popular server. When I used to run MW2.3 and BadgerKing at the same time (and when the game had a bit more players) I would regularly use 200GB/month or more (I recall hitting 250GB at least once). I figure I probably use around 80 to 120 GB/month on MW2.3 right now, but it's hard to say since I run some other stuff now and I don't individually track bandwidth usage.

btw, will these bandwidth requirements change in 2.4? And will some lag compensation be introduced in 2.4?
