How about requiring registration? Maybe it is just me, but this nick of the day brigade is a bit childish. I would much prefer to know who I am playing against.

I have more than a few excellent, very experienced admins, and a few that are more occasional. After ten years, we've seen it all. They are given explicit instructions in how to handle certain situations. They provide regular reports, and I am aware of the situations that occur at different times of day. I feel we deal with major problems quickly and correctly, at least 90 percent of the time. However, it is a 24 hour a day workload, and there are certainly some that get past us.
I apologize if one or more of the players offended you.

Planet MoFo was founded on a certain Ideal that has served us well for a decade. Part of that ideal is that we are more tolerant of questionable behavior than other servers. We were tired of getting banned for slight infractions on other servers, so we founded our own. We were the troublemakers, as a result....

We have One Rule: Don't Be an Asshat!
What constitutes Asshattery? Some things are easy to pick out, everything else is up to the admin's discretion.
1. Religious or racial taunting (we serve the whole planet, not just parts of it), spamming, and of course cheating, will get you banned without warning.
2. Singling out another player for abuse will get you banned after a single warning. It will probably be a relatively short ban the first time, but I am particularly vehement against this infraction. This will permanently put you, and your IP host on my #$%^list. I'll be looking for you. I will protect newbs, we were all newbs once. We need newbs. Let me say that again. WE. NEED. NEWBS.
3. Swearing is OK, up to a point. We even swear in the server messages. We encourage humor and will laugh at a dirty joke, but that kind of thing can very quickly devolve into asshattery, at which point It's up to the admin's discretion. I have told them to be a little more severe on this lately.
4. Registered players will get some additional credit in these situations. We'll be disappointed in you, more than anything else. I trust and support my admins, only three times have I reversed a ban, and all three times it was a registered player.
5. And remember, everything you say is logged. I have no problem digging out what you said yesterday, months, or even years ago. I'll ban you for it too.

Having said all that, I estimate that half a dozen players are responsible for at least 90 percent of the borderline asshattery. You can probably name them as well as I. For that reason I have seriously considered changing to "registered only" more than a few times over the last couple of years. This spring it seemed like we were getting a few extra problem children, and I made it clear to them that I could very easily require registration to play. It would take just a few seconds to enable -requireIdentify, and I must say that I was very close to pulling that trigger earlier this year. I almost did it. Things have quieted down a bit.

In summary, -requireIdentify is always a possibility, and now closer than it's ever been. I'm still against it, but it would not take much to tip the scales the other way.

Even registered call signs can be (and sometimes are) changed on a whim. Also, a single person is allowed to have multiple registered call signs (many do). So -requireIdentify might reduce the load on the Planet MoFo admins a bit, but it won't necessarily make much of a difference in the ability of non-admin players to reliably know who is who.

Chat is not needed at all, then no problems such as these.
I suggest disabling it.
Its team, if desired, can talk on Skype. Everything else solid trolling and abuse. Ahh, sorry, still praise, but it is banal.

You can simply add everyone to your client's ignore list if that's the problem. /ignore *

Of course, that would apply to other servers as well as admin messages.

EDIT: Seems it isn't /ignore I was thinking of, but /silence, though this doesn't seem to work for the wildcard. But, if you press 'k', you can enter a * and it will silence/unsilence all chat.

blast, how it works?

If I block a specific user, it also does not work (and it is not normal to block each user separately)

While I am not Blast: I believe where * is the user name of the person.

Hmm, I was actually thinking of the /silence command (but was confusing it for the IRC command /ignore), but it seems that the /silence command doesn't accept *. However, if you press 'k', you get the '[Un]Silence" prompt, at which point you can type a * and press enter, and it will say "Silenced All Msgs" or "Unblocked Msgs", depending on if you already have it silenced or not.

To Optic, and other frequenters:

I was banned today (for good, I believe). Mofo is a great map and a total blast to play. My ban is righteous, and fair, and I don't object to it. My behaviour was abusive, and my trolling true. I just can't help myself; I love talking crap and getting under people's skin. I knew one day my actions would come back to bite me, and today they finally did (a bit overdue if I'm being honest...). I just wanted to say thanks for the fun, thanks for the good times, the good booms, and good pwns. I'll miss some of you guys, and definitely playing the game. Maybe I will see you all around sometime, but, out of shame, I'll probably have changed my username.

Until next time my friends...

Tread lightly.

Mach, I cannot say that anyone has ever taken a ban quite so well.
I read the log and cannot say that I want to see anything like that again.
For the record, it's 30 days in the hole.

jitter problems

I keep getting kicked from Planet-MoFo.com for jitter problems (I think), so I ran three ping jobs simultaneously on my computer.

ping cars.com
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 18.183/21.198/24.186/1.889 ms
That looks fine.

ping iastate.edu
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 48.901/52.161/62.657/2.496 ms
OK...

ping Planet-MoFo.com
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 8.454/28.806/90.095/32.293 ms
Not so good. These results are reproducible. reliablesite.net or something between them and me is a problem.

If you're bored, you could run a traceroute to Planet-MoFo.com, and then a ping to the various hops on the way to their server to narrow down where the jitter is introduced. They could then pass that info on to their hosting provider.

pings

I just tried that. Unfortunately many hosts on the path do not show up in the traceroute or do not respond to pings. :(
The internet used to be a much friendlier place.

Why does MoFo have such a low jitter requirement anyway? A jitter of 30 ms is pretty darn small.

Is there a way to purposely delay all the pings to my computer a certain amount? My quickest pings are 8 ms, which is much faster than I really need. If I delayed all pings to the same longer 75 ms time, That would still be fast enough to play.

I can hide the flag of my team? This is considered decent or not? Many people do not like. But I believe that it does not violate the rules.

But the task is not only to capture the flag of the other team, but also to protect their own, is not it? I do not blame that other players do not examine the area and do not know the hiding places.

I hide the flag only to where I can get it.

4209

I don't usually do this, but I'm announcing a test server. This server will not be public or on the list server, and no authentication. May or may not be running at any time between now and Sunday.
The address is Mofo.Allejo.io : 4209
The reason is that it is my third attempt at eliminating every tiny pocket where team flags may be hidden under the HOJ (Hole of Justice) and the Suntrust building. I determined that the one pocket under the Suntrust was less than a tenth of a square unit. Under the HOJ, something was happening other than what I thought was happening, so if there's still a spot where they can be hidden, i think it will be near the HOJ.
Please test and report if you can find a way to hide the team flags. A screenshot would be totally awesome.

Other things you may see:
Reduced shots from five to four.
New Player Spawn Zones. Smaller, Centered. This is a big change. Not sure how well it will play with a full server. Easy to change again later.
Flag Spawns on-average are closer to center.
The Return of ShockWave.
The Return of Rapid Fire (that's been gone for months and NOT ONCE did someone mention that they missed it.)
2 Shot-Limited wings flags. (unlimited ones are still there too)
No OO flags spawn above zero Z (can spawn only on the floor)

I went over the entire existing map with a fine tooth comb.
Fixed team flag hiding. (see above)
HOJ pillars and thin walls adjusted up one unit, so nothing spawns on them. (I hope)
Lowered HOJ teleporter. Easy to jump over.
On the large mesh platform, there used to be short vertical edges where you could “land”. These non-planar faces are repaired.
Outer fence now fully drawinfo'd. This should have been done long long ago in galaxy far far away. You won't notice any difference, but i did get an idea for the future of the fence.

The Pillars under the base are now fully drawinfo'd, and slightly rotated. I have a feeling players will hate the weird ricochets because it's too easy to suicide, but heheheh. Found a small mistake in that mesh and corrected it. Might be a little easier to move around on the shelf pyramids. I've taken a little bit of flak over the design of these pillars, but it plays exactly the way i want it too. I don't want those shelves to be too easy for campers. I think it's perfect from a gameplay perspective, but I'm always open to your thoughts.
There may still be unreachable flag spawns on the base pillars, under the platform. Unable to fix at this time. I'm not even sure exactly why it happens, I checked every vertex, and it looks like these spawns should not happen. Thankfully no tanks have ever spawned there.
Placing a base directly on top of a mesh object is tricky to do, and is very easy to screw up. ....Now I had an idea.... I could drop the base down a few units, and make a small hole in the platform. Now you have to drop down into, or jump up out of the base. Very interesting, solves other problems too. i think. This will be the next order of business after this Six_Teen Release.

The three black pillars I am more or less happy with. However, the semi-rectangular box at the top of them... I have never been happy with that thing. Sooner or later I'll change it completely.

Things I didn't mention:
Plugins.
Villages.

I am aware that there are more than a couple spots where if you do the correct actions, you can pull yourself into and through a wall.
I am interested in any spots where the team flag may be hidden inside a wall,

The method to test this is....
1. Grab a team flag.
2. pull yourself into that wall, like you did before.
3. drop the team flag.
5. if the team flag stays inside the wall, in a place where it will be impossible to pick it up again, that's what i need to know.
To be sure there are no possible hiding areas, you need to try this several times, dropping it in a slightly different place each time.
