How does a server recognize me after changing computer/IP?

How does a server recognize me after changing computer/IP?

Post by oggologgo »

Some years ago, I was banned from a server (for bad username).

Since then I have moved, and now have a different ISP and a different IP address. I also have a new computer now, so it's a new windows installation, a new bzflag installation and a new username.

Somehow the server still knows it's me. How is this possible?

Because we aren't stupid and have to deal with trolls all the time. Also know your past call signs. You can run but not hide...

That you might not be stupid, does not magically enable a piece of software to do such a task, and does not answer my question. At this point, your reply is off topic. I asked "how", not "why".

Why would we advertise that? So miscreants could avoid it?!?

Some miscreants are so bad that it is necessary to blanket ban not only them but also anybody in their vicinity.
It really is a shame that some people lose even the opportunity to enjoy BZFlag just because somebody that lived near them thought it was fun to ruin the game for everyone. But that's the price paid sometimes to remove the thorn from our collective sides.
If the behaviour was particularly bad then they might need to move to another country, change their name and have some surgery (possibly cerebral related) to get back in again.
