2 Shell Shock Servers

Along with my renewed website, I also added two servers:

shellshock.bzflag.bz:1674; Necromancer
shellshock.bzflag.bz:6163; Rat Lab Reloaded

Both have identical setup, 3 shots and a load of flags. Still fine tuning them though, but it runs quite decent at the moment. Considering a move to 2 bullets for both maps.

Ah yes, I loved those setups dutchrai, You think you could set up the maps to rotate? if its too much trouble, forget it, But You have so many good maps... Espc King Of the Castle...

Rotating maps is on my schedule, but I haven't come around scripting yet. If someone has a Unix script for me (bash or whatever) then this would of course greatly speed up things 8)

When rotating, I will probably host the following maps:
Necromancer
Trenches and Bridges
King of the Castle
Rat Lab Reloaded

Maybe will do another server which rotates CTF maps. Working on a new one now.

In such a case, there would be two Shell Shock servers, FFA and CTF.

And since we're on the point of rotation... 8) ....what kind of rotation interval do you guys like best? 1 hour? 6 hours? 12? 24?

hmm, Rotation intervals....

The first rotating server setup changed every hour IIRC, I would say that some where between 1-3hrs would be sufficient. You have any of gerbils tricksy maps? You should throw one in there also :wink: Give people a really brain boggler :D

one of gerbil's maps?? :shock: the headache i get from work is bad enough..lol, do it anyway though, been along time since i've gotten fustrated with a map that was too complex for my slow brain. :lol-old:

Lol..yeah...Gerbil can give all of us real headaches with his creations. Not for the faint of heart :lurk:

Think I'll settle for a 2 hour rotation. Probably 3 shots for the FFA server and 2 for the CTF. Flag setup will be more or less the same, but fine-tuned to suit the needs for every map.

Done. The 4 maps I mentioned earlier are now on a 2 hour rotation shift. Hope this script works, it's very basic at the moment.

CTF server comming soon.

hmm, you're probably working on your servers or something. If not, just thought i'd let you know, i tried connecting, and i got "error connecting to server"

They're up now...maybe the server was down for a moment? Could be.

Ports will be changed very soon to 4500 and 4501 though, and it will stay that way. Will also add a Game Server section to Shell Shock which will host info about the servers (help pages if you wish :wink: )

Working on a 4 team CTF map now, will run soon. Bring on the teams!

Upon request, the shellshock.bzflag.bz:4500 FFA server is now rotating 6 maps.

More server features have been added too, amongst which are a badwords filter, persistent ban lists, report file etc.

CTF Server is up

Alright, got a CTF server up and running. Currently it plays a BETA version of a 4 team ctf map, "Total Recall". Feedback will of course be appreciated!

The CTF server is shellshock.bzflag.bz:4501

Fine Tuning

Both servers have been fine-tuned some more. Here are the final specs:

shellshock.bzlfag.bz:4500 (FFA)
- 2 shots
- 3 Rogue, 2 Red, 2 Green, 2 Blue, 2 Purple and 1 Observer (12 players)
- Plenty of good flags (no shot limits)
- 5 bad flags, all Jamming
- Jumping on
- Ricochet on

shellshock.bzlfag.bz:4501 (CTF)
- 2 shots
- 4 Team: 0 Rogue, 3 Red, 3 Green, 3 Blue, 3 Purple and 1 Observer (12 players)
- 2 Team: 0 Rogue, 4 Red, 4 Green and 2 Observers (8 players)
- Plenty of good flags (no shot limits)
- 5 bad flags, all Jamming
- Jumping on/off (map dependable)
- Ricochet on

These settings seem to work nicely and we had some good gameplay on the FFA server just now, so I will keep this as the Shell Shock configuration for now and the future.

The bad-flag configuration gives the servers a unique feel. Kinda like it. You will find no other bad flags than those 5 Jammers in the field.

If you prefer to spray bullets then these servers are not for you, but if you can appreciate the tactical approach...well, see you out there.

Hey if you could boost up the map swap time to 3 hours that'd be great. The way it is, you just start getting a good score and then it changes maps.

I know you've done alot , and I know you like it how it is.

Hey if you could boost up the map swap time to 3 hours that'd be great.
Or make no time limit, and when they join with no people map swaps. That way if people get tired of it they can leave and rejoin.

Both are good ideas, not sure what to do. I choose the 2 hour rotation so people can play on more maps, but if that is too fast...I could, like you suggest, take out the timelimit all together. The next map will then start when the field is empty. Kind of like it....thinking about it.

At the moment there seems to be something wrong with the Shell Shock website, is down the whole day. Don't know what happened, but just try again later if you need access. It should be back soon.

The problem is what if an unpopular map is being run when nobody is on, and nobody wants to play on it, will it stay hosted until some daring person joins then quits?

no, please keep the map server how it is.

If you join and you are the only person on. Just rejoin and you'll have a different map.

2hr rotation is perfect. not to long (3hr) and not to short (1hr).


wannabe wants it set up like Ducati. If the server is empty, than the map changes, however that server is rarely empty. And therefore you see the same map running for 2-4 days.

So much feedback :-) Looks like the current setup is quite ok actually, and I am inclined to go with Red Baron's suggestion: leave it as it is. It's doing just fine for now. Now there's only the issue of 2 or 3 bullets on maps with jumping enabled...both have pros and cons. Maybe a poll would be nice.
