Pythonian.com Toast and Finished

Post by Harlin »

Sorry to say this so soon, but Pythonian.com is no longer in the game as far as being a big server. I will continue to host it on my home network under Pythonian.net (and later Pythonian.com probably).

Why? Bandwidth is extremely expensive. I rented a server from Server Pronto for what I thought would be a bargain at 29.95/month. This was supposed to have entitled me to a box with 1.5gHZ cpu, 256mb of ram and 200GB of bandwidth. I was thinking the bandwidth would be more than enough to run an average bzflag server. I was wrong. I have only had it operational for a little over 10 days and have already gone far over the bandwidth limit (by about another 200GB). They charge at about 1$ per GB over the limit which I absolutely cannot afford. Guess I should have read the fine print, eh?

I have a great job and make more money than I should but not near enough to do this. Also, no one that I've talked to is willing to even chip in 1, 5, 10$ per month to help with bandwidth costs. I understand that no one should be forced to donate, but this is more than what one person can handle as far as costs. Maybe you guys can contact George Soros (his money would better support BZFlag rather than socialist Democrats IMO) or Mark Shuttlesworth to become a BZFlag benefactor. Nonetheless, this is my fault and not any individual bzflagger other than myself.

For the time being, I will host on my home network but it will be set up for low-laggers only (300ms or less lag). I look forward to playing with many of you where possible but this does hamper my faith in open projects that require real and tangible services where only a tiny bit of the population are actually contributing and the rest are only contributing by playing and using alone (disclaimer: not that there's anything wrong with that . ). At any rate, I hope I can find a fair and equitable deal from hosting companies in the near future for this sort of thing. If any of you have suggestions about certain companies or deals, please let me know about them.

Thanks,

Harlin Seritt

too bad, i liked pythonian.com ... it was one of the 3 or 4 i liked to play on... ima miss it :(

if you looking for the hosting, heres a list of <$100/m dedicated or VPS

http://servers.aplus.net/main.html - $99 for Intel 2.4GHz Celeron - 512 MB DDR - 80 GB hard drive - 1000 GB Monthly Transfer

http://www.b2netsolutions.com/dedicated ... osting.htm - $99 for - 1.7GHz Celeron - 1200 GB Bandwidth - 512 MB RAM - 80GB Hard Drive

http://www.valueweb.com/promos/dedicate ... sting2.htm - $59 AMD 1.3 GHZ CPU - 512 MB RAM - 60 GB HD - 1000 GB Bandwidth ($79 for a 1.7GHz Intel Celeron)

http://rapidvps.com/?inode=services - Varies from $30 to $75 ... the $75 seems the most appropriate under the circumstances

http://managed.com/ - not spectacular, by far ... but ive used em. theyre better then the reviews say but not spectacular as i said. lowest there is for intel is a celeron 2.4 at $65 and amd is a sempron 2.4 at $73. their 1000gb is 500/500, up and down respectively... but so long as you shut down the server every now and then, it should be fine. but one warning with managed, lock down the server as best as possible. i managed to have 5 phishing sites appear on the server and it costs $10 to get back up each time (all caused by phpbb security errors). lock the beast down and itll all go well. their fee is monthly with no contract, that i know.

BEST OF ALL THOUGH... i dont know how their game servers worked, ive only used this company and managed for shell and dedicated... this place has some nice game packages up with unlimited bandwidth (unmetered, but it is true, they dont meter it, ive burned a load of bandwidth here without it being a problem ... a good 300GB in a few weeks)

http://www.voodoohosting.com/game/gamehosting.html - 10 player game server, $40 a month, 14 is $56, 16 at $64, 20 for $80 ... i wouldnt stray beyond that. all have unmetered bw, 2gb of space, very very very basic webhosting, private ssh (you can compile it without and problem in 99% of cases, if you cant, hop on IRC and an admin is usually about to help out) as well as private ftp. their support team is fairly quick to get back to you and quick to help out as well. few ways to get in contact with em to make it easier ... not a bas company at all. if you want just game related where you wont worry about bw, take a look at vdh...

* i believe all of these BW amounts will be halved and half will be upstream and half downsteam, 1200gb being 600 up and 600 down... i only know of the second to last

but im still sad to see it go ... ill miss it. :\

Thanks for the posts guys. It is very encouraging to know you guys had fun on the server.

Pyr0, thanks for the info, that is invaluable. I've never hosted before, so I don't know a lot of vendors out there for this sort of thing.

Also, BZFlag Community (Listen Up!!), when you have a guy out there (me) who is saying he doesn't mind putting in a few bucks a month to provide some fun for free to others (you guys), help him with some research like Pyr0 obviously did. I don't know if Pyr0 was feeling charitable or if it was because he has been there and done that and wanted to pass on some golden nuggets of information but his help has been invaluable to me.

Believe me, I have been searching Google and looking through their Ads (yes! their paid advertisers) for a reliable, equitable and dependable server vendor and have not found anything better than what I *was/am* using (server pronto).

At any rate, thanks for the help. I will look into these. If it works out, I owe you one Pyr0.

you owe me nothing ... you've been kind enough to supply us with somewhere to play and enjoy the game on your own dime. i would be willing to help out but right this second im unable to do so (jobless until tomorrow morning when is start working landscaping). ill eventually (after about a month of paying people back and getting back on my feet) host a bzflag server through voodoohosting (more then likely).

that or ill help with your game server hosting and split it down the middle with you (so it would really be better to upgrade and make it double the users for double the price and pay the same you will have been paying and ill take the same price... assuming voodoohosting that is)

but no matter, it is a month away any way that i work it...

Edit: Also, the reason I've been highly recommending voodoohosting is because the 5 or 6 months I hosted an IRCd with them, it went down a total of twice for about 20 minutes each time. the first was a set downtime for an upgrade to the server (which ive noticed to be very secure) and the second time was due to one person being DDoS'd causing a loss of service on the server I was on. for that, they gave everyone on the server a month free. off i go -pyr0

Ok, I've got a deal for all :) If any of you are serious about helping me running a bzflag server that we can all call home (unless we find another one like hepcat heh), then take a look at this link and respond if it moves you: http://bzflag.pythonian.com/offer.html

Brennan,

If you would, take a look at my offer page: http://bzflag.pythonian.com/offer.html.

That will hopefully explain a few things for you.
