Network IP Issue

Post by The Guardian »

Hi.

I'm going to start a server, but I have 3 computers on a network, all sharing the IP address 80.255.59.69. They have different local IP address (192.168.123.1,192.168.123.2,192.168.123.3).

Anyway, I'm onlly starting a server on my windows (192.168.123.2), so I'd like to know how to specify THIS computer in the server address.

Can someone please tell me how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

Whatever is doing the routing from the internet connection to your network needs to forward all requests on the port you run the server on (5154?) to the internal ip address the server is running on(192.168.123.2).
Some routers call this port forwarding, tho' really it is called Destination Network Address Translation (DNAT).

you cant host a server with an ip begining with 192. thats your internal ip or your network ip. go to http://www.whatsmyip.org to find out your computer ip. also read through some threads to find things on servers.

That's not true 192.168.*.* 172.16-31.*.* and 10.*.*.* are the reserved private network addreses, his ip could easily be 192.164.12.34 and it would be a valid public address.

Is there a way where I could, for example, say for a server "80.255.59.69:192.168.123.2"? Where I include the local and the public IP in the server address...

Unless your server has a direct connection to the internet you need DNAT.
(or ipv6 support in bzflag )

No, there are loads of others, I just thought I'd ignore them.....

Don't fret, it should be in your router.

the make is the manufacturer, in your case linksys

ok: explainations

DNAT (Also Know As "Port Forwarding" and "Static Routes") is a system that router use to distribute GLOBAL connections for services to cirtain LOCAL IPs on a network.

for example you have three computers on a network and you want all incoming GLOBAL connections to bzflag on 80.255.59.69:5154 to go to a server on machine with the local IP: 192.168.123.2.

all the connections go to the router and then the router sends that connection through to one of the three connected computers. so the router needs to know which one to send it to. in your port forwardding, or static routes settings, simply put the IP address you need to send it to - the one running the server. then any body connecting to port 5154 on your global ip address will actually be connecting through to a computer on your local network.

correct me if i am wrong people.

if you don't know what a firewall is, then are you really sure you are ready to try running a proper public server? prehaps you should read up on networking and security.
