Steal the bacon is modified CTF. it's round-based, and there's only one flag, placed in the center. Teams spawn on their respective bases, are given a flag, and race to be the first to grab and caputre it. When someone wins, the round ends, everyone dies, and respawns back on base to start another round.

This is NOT designed for campers or other players who like to rack up big individual scores. It's designed to be an all-out, balls-to-the-wall scramble for the flag. Teamwork is critical. Going for solely kills is futile because you will die when the round ends anyway.

It does rely on having one bot on the red team ("place holder bot"), which is trapped in a bucket way up in the sky. If the bot gets kicked, or dies, the game is over- I'll do my best to keep one there, but I'm not going to have physical access to the server for a week or so, so I can't promise much. My roommate was nice enough to let me run a bot from his (stable) PC.

Give it a shot and tell me what you think.

yeah, very nice.
It's possible to cap the flag yourself with no help, if you get lucky when you reach the top of the centre. but it does encourage teamwork.

Uh... D'oh. the server died less than an hour after I left it alone. :x I can't put it back up because I'm at home.

Nice concept L4m3r! The only trouble that would sometimes come up would be that the red tank would get kicked for some reason or other.

M'kay, we're alive again, and there's some good news.

I've modified BZFS a bit. There are two main tweaks:

-Fixed scoring. The client would not show the local player (you) as losing a point when a flag was capped, but the server would make it show that everyone else lost a point for dying. This should not happen anymore; no one will lose any points when a flag is capped.

-Eliminated the bot. In theory, anyway. I basically removed all the parts that remove a flag when a team empties out (thanks for the idea, Blast), so the flag should never vanish. If it does for whatever reason, please join red briefly and go back to a normal team, as that should put the red flag back in place.

The code does need to be cleaned up... since the server doesn't make any team flags vanish, I can't really run a normal CTF server, heh. Not sure when I'll get to it. If I'm feeling really ambitious I may try to add something to the API and submit a patch.

Obviously some refinement is still needed as far as flag assignment (steamroller...) and the map. I'll do that part when I have time (It's the first week of spring quarter so I have to actually go to all my classes :p). I'm thinking about adding multiple bases for each team, or adding a spawn zone above each base that's surrounded by random teleporters. Also, I may start running it with three teams instead of two (red, green, blue, capturing the purple flag).

Any other suggestions, feedback, or bug reports are very much appreciated. Until then, have fun. :)

...and again, if the red flag vanishes please just switch to red and back.

Small update... and stuff that's changed since the last post.

It's now three teams, red/green/blue, with the purple flag being the "bacon".

No more SR flags. ;)

There is no longer a purple bot, or even a purple slot. I've managed to get the purple flag to spawn without having a purple slot in the game.

Soon I will make a new map and switch back to two teams. any ideas/suggestions welcome.

Some more news...

The server is now running a steal the bacon version of Boxy War. Same address.

Also, a player suggested giving points for stealing the bacon, and I realized that this was easily possible with the plugin that controls the game. So, players now get points for stealing the bacon.

^^that player was me :D also, how about the whole team gets 1 point each for managing to steal the bacon, while the player who steals it gets 2 points.
Could this tank perhaps go a little bit faster, so it's not being overtaken by stationary objects.

Maybe also keeping in the geno flag exept 1 shot with it then it would be a lovely game (pretty brutal) to play! :wink: 8)
