Yes, BZEdit won't work on Linux. Tried it under WINE some time last year, and it started, but had a ton of problems.
After some tinkering, I got BZFed compiled and working just fine. You can find a little bit of info at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bzfed/ Please note that this was last updated in March of 2005.
If I understand properly, mapmakers are encouraged to use Blender or Wings instead. Not being a mapmaker, I don't know how much Blender is used this way among the mapmaking community. Blender does have a difficult interface for people just getting into 3d modeling. Having played a bit with Blender, I can definitely say that it has a ton of power.

BZEdit is for Linux, BZEditWin32 is for Windows.
See http://my.bzflag.org/w/BZEdit for more info and also for specifics on how to get hold of the source - you'll have to compile it yourself.

Like the wiki points out, compiling BZEdit on Linux has been notoriously difficult because of it's use of features only found in older GTK versions. Installing an older GTK version would do the trick, but then you run into dependency problems (unless you install it other than a system-level place and tell the include/lib path to the configure script).
I would imagine the overwhelming majority of users would rather do it the free way instead of paying for something that offers the same amount of functionality.ducktape wrote:I got "BZEditWin32" to work in linux. I used CrossOver: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/ awesome program.
