Calling all Map Makers: The Collaborator 2010

Post by Spazzy McGee »

Hey all. I've been off the mapmaking scene for a very long while now, so I thought i'd bring back an old project to just have a bit of fun with this summer.

Those of you that have been around long enough may remember the collaborators. The original was made by Ducatiwannbe, Dutchrai, The Purple Panzer, and Sid6.7 (a map making tour-de-force if ever I saw one), and if I remember correctly, there have been two others. One was another that involved Winny and ^nightmare^, among others, and 2.0 one that I was part of (although I think that is now lost in the depths of the old BZWBB)

So anyway, enough rambling. I shall explain for those of you that don't have a clue what i'm on about:

The Collaborator is a map that many map makers take part in making. In the old collaborators, four map makers each built a corner of the standard 400 sized map. Once each corner was finished, they were collated into one map with four distinct styles of map making.

I propose we bring back the collaborator for 2010 - and with so many new faces on the map making scene I think we could make one hell of a map. Please post here if you're interested, so I can gauge how many people will be interested in making something. Now we're in the days of 2.x I don't want to be bound by just four corners - if more than four people want to take part, or if you want to make more than one section, we can make it as big or small as we like. I'd like everyone to be involved, so if you only map in 1.x, with BZEdit that's fine, or if you only ever make 2.x mesh maps that fine too. I'll even consider allowing some of the new 3.0 stuff in, if anybody feels up for the challenge (although that depends if 3.0 will be released any time soon. We don't want a map we'll never be able to play.) New map makers are just as welcome as old ones!
Who's with me?

Much love, Spazzy

Awesome!

I've been waiting for this and I think it would create an awesome map.

I think we should have everyone submit there 'sections' (maybe 200x200?) And then we'll vote on the top 8.

We could make one map with maps placed 1-4, another with the 5-8 placed maps and then one huge map with everyone's submissions?

Not sure just brainstorming but I think this could be a totally awesome map fest while throwing in a little competition ;D

I'm thinking i'd rather see loads of smaller size submissions in one map, than four large ones... But we'll see what people think.

So maybe like 8 100x100 maps into one?

That would definitely be cool and have some interesting playability :)

I'm always ready to make a map, so count me in. :)
I think you need some sort of a layout grid so people can choose which section they want to make.
Because if all the entrees are maps designed for the center the ones placed on the outside may have cutoff features/inaccessible areas.

I thought it might be cool letting people make one any size (say, under 200*200), and then fitting them all together later. That way, they don't all have to be square and stuff... But that might make things a little complicated. Perhaps if I do a map split into 9 or 16 squares and people can choose which quadrant they want before they start?

could the map be set up in a 3x3 map maker scheme so as to get 9 map makers in it
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
It would be set up as the above and each person might get labeled a number

Okay guys, thanks for the great response.

Here's what i've come up with. It'll be this or a variation of this.

I've laid out a grid below that splits a standard worldsize 400 map into 64 equal squares. Each of those squares is 100x100 units - or worldsize 50. I propose each of the map makers that wants to take part chooses some of the squares; six to ten per person probably. - they can be adjacent, or separated. In a line or in a square. As an example, I've chosen my sections. If there are lots of squares left over at the end I'll let everybody have more.
sound like a good plan? Let me know the grid references you want if you would like to take part.

I might have to double the worldsize if people think the spaces involved too small.... You should try and leave about 2 units space at the edges of your sections so people can drive between.

See the next page for the map layout!

A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3 if possible, I'd like to have the top left corner. This may be to much to ask.

Bambino, that's fine. I may extend the world if blocks are in high demand. as you know, with a bit of wizardry, worlds don't have to be square ;)

Are we allowed to use textures and teleporters?
And I assume that the map will have jumping, richo and flags?

Yes, and yes. You can use teleporters - although make sure that you know where they are going in the map, because they are hard to move around later as they can't be put in group definitions. And if you want you can negotiate linking with other players.

It would be good if the map grid you posted earlier had world coords on it,that way people would know the coords of there tiles.

Are we allowed to create spawn and flag zones for *our* section(s)?

Tell me if I'm reading this correctly; the world size is currently a square, 800x800 units in size which makes twice the normal world size, correct?

Updated the map with all the current 'rented' space. There's still more to go, so anybody else. Even if you just want to do one square, that's fine.

Just a quick point - If all the squares get used up and there continues to be demand for map makers, i'll add more around the edges.

Also - try to keep your poly-counts within reason.

Cheers.

Is there a deadline to have your section done?

What is the license going to be...?

[Edit] Each section could be licensed differently and have a "master" map file with a bunch of

Code: Select all

include /path/to/user-collab-2010.bzw
lines in it.

Just a though...
