BZFlag USA

This is meerly a dream and probably will never happen but, I was thinking that perhaps Tim could make the sky pyramid span indefinently for BZFlag2.0.6.

If this would happen, we could do a group project with every map maker on the site to create a BZFlag style USA, meaning, every mapper creates a map of their own area and those around it and submits it to a giant map that will act as the continent of USA. If this occured, perhaps 1000+ people would be in the room at once!

Just a dream.....

Gah! Can't read with those flashing images!

Ok, I see what you mean, but what's the sky pyramid? AFIAK, you can make a map as big as you want (meaning more than 400 units). It would be cool to have a BZ-USA, but not only would this take awhile, but you would need the cooperation of everybody. You'd most likely only get submissions from the people who know how to 3D model (which isn't that many), and plus they must have a great deal of free time (modelling a city could be pretty hard if you want to go into detail). That sentence was too long.

The cool part of it is, I could and stalk anyboddddddddy that makes a submission!

Well, the good news is my town is small.

But it would be insanely huge and would be impossible to play on. I can't imagine what someones FPS would be...

It would be cool, though, to have maybe 2-3 of the major cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago)

yes it would be cool, but it would be un-organized, and you would get really low FPS...

and that rpg is why I won't submit one

I don't want to be stalked by a crazy person

if you build a world bigger then the sky pyramid, once you leave the sky pyramid, the graphics get kooky and the sky vanishes

go into observer mode and drive out of the world backwards and eventually you will leave a pyramid that houses the sky. If you look anywhere else, it would be all messed up and black/blurry.

that, my friend, i believe automaticly changes depending on the map size.

if we had a detailed, 1:1 scale model of the usa not only will you need the world's fastest server, but it would be way to big and you wouldn't be able to travel accross the map quickly enough, and there are an average of 100 people on public bzflag servers at once, and a map that big would not work with 5-40 people.

idea!: mabye you could have airports with a huge line of teles pointing to cities

isn't it odd how i want to contribute to it and at the same time i'm saying this idea wouldn't work? :)

I would host it on my school's mainframe.

The teleporter idea makes me remember the Magician's Nephew, the first book of the Chronicals of Narnia, where, to go to different worlds, they would start off in a forest and jump into a poll which immediately brought them to a world.

Kind of random eh? :D

How about starting with the 50 states? Each person who want's to participate could make a separate map of thier own start (or whichever they want to do). It might be hard to keep the scale the same - make Rhode Island 100x100 (small map!) and you'll end up with a HUGE Texas.

Since BZ maps must be square, the outside border of the state could be defined by a mesh, then add in the major geological features and and cities - at greatly reduced detail - tall meshboxes for the skyscrapers or mountains, major rivers/lakes.

Hmmm....

We could also carve the bottom of the ocean too...

With tiny cities we would be Godzilla!

Is there a way to only load a portion of that map. then when someone moves into another section that section of the map is loaded.

I don't think this exsists, but can it be created.

It would allow for smaller maps being run and rendered on everyones machine, and would possible break it up for the server.

It would also make it simpler to compile all the maps together, but making it so that you wouldn't have to but them all in one file. If you could just like many files. Otherwise you could make one file, but just load sections.

Is this possible?

hmm... I do not happen to be good with C++ only others that are not supported by BZFlag.

We need a dev.

Or Tim.

Or someone who knows the C++ well and can write it in....

Or maybe a bunch of config files....

Im all messed up now... :?

try first of all making a map of Cyprus maybe, or another island, then you will be better fit to go bigger and bigger.

Standaroules Plumbarmacy: good idea.

im fine u?: I have seen this done on other games, and worked well. I don't think it would be to difficult, but would probably take a lot of changes.

I was going to wait for a more stable version of 2.0.5 to come (2.0.6?)

Perhaps that will provide all the materials I require.

What's new in that version that warrants waiting?

If you need some sort of exotic material, BZFlag may never have it - your best bet is to suggest it to a dev, if at all.

i started one once but it got to HUGE
i even scanned a map of the USA and
used a converter of trepans? to import it....
