That's not a video recording, nor will you be able to do that on any server except your own. If you want to record a video of what your screen shows, you need a screen capture program. On Windows (and assuming you have a halfway modern nVidia or ATI graphics card) I would recommend spending a bit of money and get FRAPS. They do have a free version of FRAPS, but it is limited to 30 seconds of video, and it adds a watermark to the top of the video.

There are other options as well, but FRAPS is the only one I have tried (and is designed to record games).

any that work with linux?

the ones I have tried place a black square where the bzflag window is (window mode)

or just record blackscreen (fullscreen mode)

/record start and /record stop are server commands that tell the server to record the action (the server must be configured for recording, as well). These are not client side recordings and are NOT video recordings. They are recordings of the data the server receives so that it can play back a game (on a server set up as a replay server) and a bzflag client can join and watch. They are generally used to help solve disputes and allegations in the leagues and for server owners to go back and review questionable behaviors (at least in my experience).

You need to use /record save <filename> <amount of previous seconds> after the recording has been started.
